from www.seattlepi.com – The man who police said used a fake badge and a box of porn to commit a series of robberies in Seattle parks was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly bragged on a bus about being on the run, investigators said.
Police have been looking for the man, Ryan James Purdy [pictured], since December and got a break after he allegedly boasted about his role.
“The passenger got off the bus and called the real police,” department spokesman Jonah Spagenthal-Lee said in a statement. “
When Auburn police officers arrived, Purdy continued his streak of impersonation, giving officers a fake name in an attempt to convince them he was someone other than a wanted man. It didn’t work, and Auburn police booked Purdy into jail.”
Police said he approached several people in Volunteer Park last December, flashed a fake badge at his victims, and fled with their cash and credit cards.
“Since we posted Purdy’s picture on the (Police Department’s online) blotter, detectives believe he’s tried to pull his fake cop scam on two other occasions, most recently in North Seattle,” department spokesman Jonah Spagenthal-Lee said in a Tuesday statement.
“Shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, Purdy’s latest victim was walking through Woodland Park — near North 50th Street and Woodland Park Avenue North — when another man, believed to Purdy, approached him and asked him to come look at a box of pornographic magazines lying in the grass inside the park.”
The victim, who didn’t want kids to see the porn, took the box and walked to his car. But police say the suspect followed and also got into the man’s car.
“That’s when the suspect flashed a fake badge, said he was doing a ‘drug sting,’ and said he needed to pat the victim down,” Spagenthal-Lee said.
“During the pat down, the suspect took the victim’s wallet, rifled through it, and returned it to the man. The suspect then took back his box of porn, got out of the victim’s car, and the victim drove off.”
The victim realized about an hour later that his bank card was missing from his wallet. He called police after learning it had been used at a grocery store.
“In a separate incident, police also believe Purdy knocked on the door of a Capitol Hill home and told a woman inside that he was a federal agent,” Spagenthal-Lee said. “The woman promptly slammed the door in his face.”
Purdy, who also has gone by Tracy Byers, has not been charged. Seattlepi.com does not typically name suspects until they’re charged, but Purdy’s name and picture were widely distributed by police earlier this week when he was on the run.
