from www.bostonherald.com – Porn star Ron Jeremy suffered a heart aneurysm and was fighting for his life in a Los Angeles hospital last night, just a day after getting a lecture on his bad eating habits from his pal, former Spooky World impresario Dave Bertolino.
“Someone brought a dozen doughnuts to the theater and Ron was the first one with his hand in the box for a honey glazed chocolate,” said Bertolino, who is in La La producing “The Deep Throat Sex Scandal.”
“I was trying to steer him towards the vegetable platter. But you know what they say about Ronnie, he never turns down food or work.”
Jeremy was to have a cameo in Bertolino’s play, a comedy about the landmark ’70s porn flick and the political upheaval and trial that it spawned.
“He was going to play the judge that sentenced Harry Reems to jail,” Bertolino said.
Reems, in case you weren’t around back then, did time in prison for appearing nude in “Deep Throat” until a cadre of Tinseltown lefties hired a then-little-known Harvard law prof named Alan Dershowitz to free him.
Bertolino, who sold his horror theme park back in 2005, bought the rights to the “Deep Throat” saga more than five years ago for $1. He has been trying to put on the play ever since, but it has been plagued by bad karma.
He tried launching it in New York and cast former porn star Marilyn Chambers to play Linda Lovelace’s older pal. But Chambers died of a brain aneurysm before the play hit the stage. Then the off-Broadway theater where the show premiered closed just days after “Deep Throat” opened because of a dispute between the theater operator and his landlord.
Bertolino’s play officially opens tonight at the Zephyr Theatre on Melrose but it won’t be the same without Jeremy, who was to alternate cameo appearances with “Brady Bunch” star Christopher Knight (aka Peter Brady), longtime actress Sally Kirkland and Hollywood heavy Bruce Vilanich.
“Ronnie’s got a heart of gold,” Bertolino said. “He’s actually quite a philanthropist. He’s helped so many people but he does it anonymously so he doesn’t get any credit. He’s really a great guy.”
