North Carolina- from www.starnewsonline.com – A former New Hanover County Schools teacher accused of having a relationship with a 15-year-old student she used to teach was sentenced to more than three years in prison Wednesday after she pleaded guilty to indecent liberties with a minor.

Jessica Wishnask, a 28-year-old former Williston middle school teacher, pleaded guilty in New Hanover County Superior Court and will have to register as a sex offender for 30 years.

Last May, the then-27-year-old wife and mother was arrested by a Wilmington police officer who found her in “intimate contact” with the youth a parked car downtown. She was initially charged with taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Charges of statutory rape, a felony, and disseminating harmful material to a minor, a misdemeanor were dismissed in return for her guilty plea.

Wishnask was never indicted by a grand jury, so she consented to be formally charged without having a grand jury hand over the accusations.

Despite being twice suspended from her teaching job at Williston School of Math, Science and Technology, New Hanover County Schools Assistant Superintendent John Welmers had written Wishnask a letter of recommendation to work at a Pitt County school where she got a job teaching at Pactolus School in February 2009. She quit that job shortly after her arrest last summer.

At first, New Hanover County Schools officials would not reveal why Wishnask, who had been hired there in August 2006, had been suspended.

But later, they finally shed some light on her suspensions after repeated inquires into her performance. The first suspension came in October 2008 after a faculty member saw Wishnask in a locked classroom with a male student. The school district investigated the incident, but found no evidence of illegal physical or sexual contact between Wishnask and the student.

Wishnask was suspended a second time in November 2008 after she was seen talking to the same student at an athletic event after having been told to cease communication with him. Another investigation showed that the student approached the teacher. Wishnask actually resigned from Williston in December 2008 before her second paid suspension took effect.
