from www.sfweekly.com – Usually, there are few things that spark a good story like sex and murder.

Art and Jim Mitchell were the 20th century forerunners of the porn industry in San Francisco. From films such as Behind the Green Door in 1972 to their celebrity-frequented adult club, The O’Farrell Theatre, the Mitchell Brothers quickly raised a racy, naked empire. However, the empire came crashing down in 1991 when Jim shot and murdered Art.

Today, Liberty Bradford Mitchell (“Yes, my parents were hippies who took too much acid before naming their children,” she says), Art’s daughter and the oldest of the Mitchell brothers’ 10 children, appears to be happy and at least semi-functional.

Since her father’s death, she has moved to Los Angeles to work as a yogi and raise a family. It was during a child abuse training session that she was required to take while working part-time as a yoga instructor at the YMCA that she realized, “for the first time what I’d always felt was true: Exposing children to pornography is a form of sexual abuse.”

Well, yeah.

It was this revelation that caused her to reflect on her upbringing in the porn industry. “As passive as my exposure was — no one was forcing it on me, it was simply always there — it was inappropriate and unexplained,” she wrote in a recent blog feature on MariaShriver.com. “It was abuse.”

While working on The Women’s Conference with Shriver, Mitchell heard other abuse survivors tell their stories “that made my life look pretty damn manageable in comparison” and decided it was time to share her experience.

Now, she has launched a Kickstarter to support a “multi-media stage production” of her life and family. While it’s unclear exactly what that means, the campaign has 58 backers pledging $9,885 so far — falling short of the $25,000 goal. With 11 hours left on the clock, it seems doubtful that Mitchell will raise funds in time. Whether this means that she will find alternate funding, or the tale of The Pornographer’s Daughter will remain forever untold remains to be seen.
