from – An alleged affair of a few weeks’ duration between an Urbana High School teacher and one of her students could result in as many as 30 years in prison for the woman.

Tammy Bond, 45, was arraigned Thursday afternoon on six felony counts alleging sexual activity between her and a 16-year-old boy she tutored at the high school.

Bond, who listed an address in the 1700 block of South Prospect Avenue, Champaign, was charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and two counts of indecent solicitation of a child, all alleging sex acts that took place between March and May 6. All the charges contain the element that Bond was in a position of trust and authority over the teen.

Because the criminal sexual assault counts allege different acts on different days, the law says that sentences for the Class 1 felony have to be served one after the other. If convicted of those counts, Bond faces a mandatory prison sentence of four to 15 years on each. The other four counts are Class 2 felony offenses.

Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Larson said the acts took place in Bond’s car, which she let the 16-year-old drive.

“The victim is a 16-year-old Urbana High School student. She is a teacher assigned to tutor him,” Larson told Judge Rich Klaus.

Larson said the sex acts between the two allegedly began right after spring break, which ended March 22, and continued through Monday of this week. The boy’s guardian had learned that he was driving a car, which the guardian discovered was registered to Bond.

State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said the guardian confronted Bond about it and told her to stop letting the teen drive the car. When that didn’t happen, the guardian went to police on Monday.

Larson said Urbana police investigated and learned that Bond had reportedly bought clothes and a cellphone for the teen, gave him money, and performed sex acts with him “10 to 15 times.”

Police obtained Bond’s cell phone and found “explicit text messages to the victim describing sexual acts they had performed on each other,” Larson said.

At Bond’s request, Klaus continued her case to May 23 to give her time to hire her own attorney.

Assistant Public Defender Anthony Ortega said Bond has lived in Champaign County since 1994 and served in the Army. A special education teacher, Bond has been a teacher at Urbana High School since 2008, and worked as a secretary at Urbana Middle School from 2000 to 2003. She was suspended with pay from her position Tuesday.

Ortega asked that the $50,000 bond set on the warrant issued Wednesday by Judge John Kennedy be lowered but Klaus declined to do that.

He ordered Bond, should she be released from custody, to have no contact with the teen and to submit to testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
