from www.newscow.net – Winfield High School English teacher Ashley Eck was formally charged this afternoon with one count of unlawful sexual relations involving a student.
She was booked at the Cowley County Jail in Winfield around 8:15 a.m. this morning and released a short time later. Eck is free on her own recognizance with a bond of $10,000.
A condition of her bond is that she not be in contact with any accusers in the case. County Attorney Chris Smith said he has not ruled out additional charges being filed against Eck in regard to accusations from other students.
The identity of the alleged male victim was not disclosed in court.
Around 2:30 p.m., Eck made a first appearance in the Winfield courtroom of Judge Nick St. Peter and acknowledged she understood the charge against her. She is represented by Wichita attorney David Moses.
USD 465 Superintendent J.K. Campbell, and other district officials, attended the appearance. Campbell confirmed Eck remained on paid administrative leave with the district.
She was placed on leave this spring when the investigation by local authorities began.
Eck is being represented by Wichita attorney David Moses. Her next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 2, at which time a preliminary hearing date could be set.
St. Peter noted he was setting that date to give the defense sufficient time to review evidence in the case.
The charge against Eck is a felony punishable 31 months to 136 months in prison.
Smith said the defendant was cooperative and not a flight risk, in explaining her OR bond.
