from www.mycentraljersey.com – A Plainfield High School teacher is accused of having a relationship with a 16-year-old student that included daytime sexual encounters in a classroom, authorities said Friday.

Jennalin M. Garcia-Calle, 28, of Piscataway is charged with second-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree child abuse, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and Plainfield Police Division Director Martin Hellwig. She was arrested this week in Davie, Fla. by members of the U.S. Marshals Service and currently is being held in Florida’s Broward County Jail on $200,000 bail, with the expectation of being extradited to New Jersey in the coming days, authorities said.

Garcia-Calle was charged Tuesday after an investigation revealed that her alleged relationship with the student, a male, began sometime in December 2012, according to Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.

“What made this particularly … unusual is that they actually had sex in school, in her classroom,” Romankow said, noting that the alleged activity is believed to have taken place during times when classes were in session. “Evidently they blocked the windows and locked the door.”

When Garcia-Calle discovered that school officials had learned of the matter, she traveled to Florida and entered a rehabilitation program, Romankow added, praising county Detective Patricia Gusmano for what he labeled “excellent, aggressive work” in the investigation. The website for the facility in which Garcia-Calle had been receiving treatment, the Recovery Institute of South Florida in Fort Lauderdale, describes it as a drug treatment center that also facilitates healing for sexual compulsivity, psychiatric issues, depression and other psychiatric issues.

Garcia-Calle and the student are alleged to have engaged in sexual relations on at least three occasions. The investigation was sparked when the student informed a family member about his relationship with the teacher and that family member reached out to police, authorities said.

Upon learning of the charges, the Plainfield Board of Education placed Garcia-Calle on an administrative suspension pending the outcome of the criminal investigation, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Plainfield Schools Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles declined comment on the matter Friday, citing an active investigation, and wouldn’t say how long Garcia-Calle has worked in the district. But copies of Plainfield Board of Education agendas indicate that her employment as a math teacher at the high school had been extended for a term of one school year during each of the last four summers, most recently with a $50,600 salary for the current school year.

Though schools officials weren’t talking about Garcia-Calle Friday, students at Plainfield High School certainly were, using social media to register their thoughts about her arrest. Hundreds of tweets from dozens of students touched on the matter — some cracking jokes, others expressing dismay, and still others noting that television news crews flocked to the school en masse to ask questions.

By late Friday afternoon, a Twitter hashtag had even been created to share sentiments: #FreeMsGarcia.

“Embarrassing,” one student wrote about the arrest.

“Ms. Garcia isn’t a criminal in my eyes; she doesn’t deserve jail,” another wrote.

Garcia-Calle also ran for a seat on the Carteret Board of Education last year, according to public records, but she finished last in voting within a field of six candidates vying for three open seats.
