from www.desmoinesregister.com – A staff member alerted Bondurant-Farrar administrators that a district athletic coach was “possibly having sexual relations” with an unnamed victim, according to a Polk County Sheriff’s office incident report released this afternoon.

Melissa Lyn Eshelman, 30, was charged on Thursday with sexual exploitation by a school employee. She was booked into the Polk County Jail and released later that day after posting a $2,000 bond for the aggravated misdemeanor.

The heavily redacted incident report does not indicate whether the alleged victim is male or female; the victim’s age; or whether the victim is a student or former student. However, Iowa Code states that sexual exploitation by a school employee occurs when there is any sexual conduct with a student.

The report indicates the incident happened sometime between May 2010 and November 2012.

Polk County Sgt. Jana Rooker said the charge involves inappropriate relations with one person.

Asked whether parents should be concerned about the welfare of their children, Rooker said: “We only have one victim listed in the report, so I don’t think there’s a significant reason for the community to be in alarm or fear for the safety of their children because of this incident. But we always encourage that parents have an open line of communication with their kids.”

Added Rooker: “This is a good reminder that parents shouldn’t be afraid to ask their kids questions periodically.”

Rooker said more information about the alleged victim could not be released because doing so could reveal the person’s identity. She also said that she could not say whether the alleged offense occurred on school property because it was not specified in the report and was part of the ongoing investigation.

“We’re trying to be conservative right now due to the fact that it’s a sex crime … it is an ongoing investigation,” Rooker said.

Rooker did say that investigators are looking at whether there could have been more than one incident or other victims related to this single offense: “We definitely don’t want to close the door to that,” she said.

High School principal Mike Kramer and Superintendent Peggy Vint contacted Polk County authorities on Nov. 20 after Josh Gibson, sixth-grade teacher and high school track and football coach, told them Eshelman possibly engaged in sexual relations with someone, according to the incident report. Eshelman resigned after Vint and Kramer spoke with her on Nov. 20.

The district administrators contacted authorities the following day, according to the report.

Vint said she has turned over all information to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The school board accepted Eshelman’s resignation as assistant girls varsity basketball coach on Monday.

Vint said she could not release anything about the allegations because of the sensitivity of the investigation. She only confirmed Eshelman had been a basketball and soccer coach in the district for six years. Eshelman did not hold any teaching responsibilities.

Vint said district officials and the school board know very little of the sexual exploitation situation.

“We are not judge, jury; we don’t know guilt, innocent, we don’t know anything,” she said. As of Friday morning, Vint said she had not heard of any concerns from students and parents about the situation.

“I think our parents all have confidence in the school district staff,” Vint said. “The school district staff will take care of their students.”

Vint said the district plans to replace Eshelman.

School Board Member Mike McNichols declined to comment about the situation Friday morning, stating he was confident the superintendent communicated all that could be shared.

School Board President Kristin Swift would not share details of what she knows about the investigation and alleged incident, but she approved of the way the district handled the situation.

“We appreciate the administrations timely response to the allegations,” she said.
