Kurt Lockwood writes on www.citypaper.com – The perspective of the male porn star is rarely, if ever, explored, which is unfortunate but understandable since most porn is still purchased by men to look at women and we are seen either as necessary evils or as life-support systems for our cocks. So I thought you, Dear Reader, might enjoy a breakdown of how a typical day on the porn set goes for me.

I am usually contacted anywhere from a month ahead to the day of the shoot by my agent (well, back when I had an agent; I am now in my third decade of shooting porn and most of the production companies and directors already know who I am, and we would both rather deal with each other directly than pay agency fees). Production generally gives me the date, the time, the location, and my wardrobe (unless it’s a big feature shoot, we porn performers are generally responsible for providing our own wardrobes).

For me, this generally entails my suit—I have a dark gray Calvin Klein suit that I purchased specifically for set use, primarily because then I don’t care when it inevitably ends up crumpled on the floor, discarded in sexual haste, and yes, the dry cleaning bill is a small fortune.

The last bit of information they want to give us is the name of the girl that we are working with. Now, you may think this odd because we’re going to be having sex together. However, before I am ever called, the production has checked with the girl to make sure that I am on her “yes, she will work with him” list.

Girls also have a “no, I will not work with him” list and that’s something you don’t want to be on. So with the girl already on board, the production generally just assumes the guy is OK with whomever he is fucking since it is very rare that guys will put any girls on their “no” lists, because it means less work and is bad for the ol’ bank account.

There are other reasons why production is reticent with the names of our female co-stars and that is a) in case you don’t like the girl you really don’t have any say in changing anything once you get there, and b) there are (surprise!) some real creeps who work in the jizz biz who will try to contact the girl ahead of time for some lame attempt at “Well, since we are fucking on camera tomorrow anyway, why don’t we fuck off-camera tonight?” So, in order to avoid all that potential drama, production keeps information close to their chest.

I never wear my costume to set, always my street clothes, because you never get a second chance to make a first impression and I am meeting the vast majority of the girls that I have sex with on camera for the very first time when I arrive so I want to look like myself and not like some character I’ll be portraying. It’s very important for that initial meeting between “talent” to go well; a lot is determined in that first second. I mean, we are going to be performing the most intimate act two people can do with their bodies on camera together for all the world to see, forever and ever, amen, so I always try to be very nice and friendly, to let the girl know that I am experienced, professional, and that she can relax and know that she is in good hands for her scene today.

I say that because there are only about a hundred of us guys in the entire world who actually make our living having sex with beautiful porn starlets and the reason (besides obvious and necessary physical attributes) is that we are skilled. Yep, you heard me. Being a male porn star is a skill just like welding or carpentry. It’s not just you and the girl in the scene: It’s you, the girl, the camera, and the light, and you as male porn star have to guide the scene with an internal timer that says when to change positions smoothly. Sexually, it’s more akin to leading a girl through a dance than anything else. I am the Fred Astaire of fornication, if you will.

When I arrive, it’s usually a case of “Hurry up and wait.” The director approves my wardrobe, I fill out my “model releases” and my tax paperwork (Yup, Uncle Sam gets a cut of my sex money just like any pimp!), I see the girl’s current and clean STD test (we are tested every 30 days and are not allowed to shoot without proof), my ID’s are photographed, and then, unless there is a script, the director usually gives me the scene scenario for today, or we improv one together. So many porn plots are so corny because it’s very difficult to come up with new sex scenarios, something that has never been shot before, so a lot of times, things turn silly.

Then I will wait, and wait, and wait while the girl is with the still-photographer on set shooting what we call “pretty girls,” which is essentially the woman stripping naked for the camera. After this (during which, by the way, I am usually smoking a bowl of California’s finest medicinal greenery), I am finally up to bat.

Next up are sex stills. Now there are two schools of thought here: Some directors want the girl’s makeup to be perfect during the stills, like a hardcore-magazine layout, so we will determine all the sex positions we are going to do during the scene and then we quickly take pics in all those positions, keeping the girl’s makeup immaculate. Or, there is the other school of thought that says the girls should look like they are having hot, sweaty sex during the still pics, makeup be damned!

Finally, we’re ready for the real scene. But you’ll have to come back next week for that.
