LA Weekly: Porn’s HIV Case Didn’t Originate On-Set

from www.laweekly.com – The porn industry’s lobbying group said last night that a performer who has initially turned up positive for HIV did not contract the virus on-set.

As the Free Speech Coalition set out to ease fears of an STD outbreak, its leader, CEO Diane Duke [pictured], said ” … there is no indication of on-set transmission.” That as the possible porn star in question was identified in the adult trade press as …

… a woman with the stage name Cameron Bay.

Xbiz reported that Mark Schechter, the owner of Adult Talent Managers (ATMLA), confirmed the ID but said extra tests were being done to confirm or contradict the original positive signal.

In a statement sent to the Weekly and other outlets, the FSC said that, indeed, “additional confirmatory tests are being conducted:”

Duke added:

FSC is working hand-in-hand with the APHSS (Adult Production Health & Safety Services)-affiliated doctor to contact and treat performers for any possible exposure involving the primary patient.

… Because of the rigorous APHSS protocols, the situation was accessed quickly and – most importantly – action was taken to ensure the protocols were followed. APHSS protocols for performer testing go well beyond what is typical for STI testing in the general population; our standards have been developed by industry stakeholders and medical experts, to provide an unprecedented system to uphold industry self-regulation and protect the welfare of our performers.

Yesterday Duke asked the industry to halt production while the situation was contained.

By maintaining that the HIV exposure couldn’t have happened on-set, the industry appears to be trying to take some of the wind out of the sails of the L.A.-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which spearheaded a successful ballot initiative called Measure B that mandates condom use for adult performers in most of L.A. county.

The law doesn’t apply to porn stars’ personal lives. The industry has maintained that its monthly and twice-a-week performer testing keeps STD outbreaks at bay and nips ones like this in the bud.

The AHF used the occasion of the HIV report yesterday to call on the industry to comply with the condom law. The group’s chief, Michael Weinstein, said:

How many adult film performers have to become infected with an array of preventable sexually transmitted diseases–including HIV, which is not curable–before the porn industry actually complies with the law requiring condom use?

The HIV scare comes on the heels this month of a syphilis report that turned out to be bunk and Hepatitis scare that had yet to be confirmed.
