Review: WKRP in Cincinnati A XXX Parody from New Sensations

This one’s a no-brainer. Because it’s commonly accepted that every red-blooded guy in the world tuned into WKRP In Cincinnati for only one thing… and it wasn’t the witty repartee. It was for Loni Anderson and her tits. Okay, make that three things. Myself, I prefer the quiet, unobtrusive chick in the corner, and bespectacled Bailey Quarters [the delectable Jan Smithers] certainly fit that bill.

The good news here is that director Lee Roy Myers with WKRP in Cincinnati: A XXX Parody from New Sensations grabs all the best moments from that series- including the vanity of Herb Tarlek [Ralphy Lyons] the paranoia of Mr. Carlson [Rod Fontana], the almost ridiculous gravitas of Les Nessman [Scott Lyons], the super cool but very stoned Dr. Johnny Fever persona [Evan Stone] and rolls it into a very succinct, satisfying episode of porn comedy.

Then he’s got New Sensations contract gal Ashlynn Brooke playing the platinum bombshell Anderson part [only with a little less cleavage] but every bit as sexy, and the seriously attractive Holly Heart as Bailey. To me, Heart’s the show stopper, then, like I said, I gravitate to that type.

Myers, like Will Ryder, excels with the eye for total accuracy and faithful rendition which is critically important if you’re going to carry these things off and make them real enough as to be believable. Likewise, casting Ryan McLane as the program director Andy Travis is also inspired. McLane, whose job it is to get the station out of a jam when concert promotion tickets come up missing, is the first prize winner in the Gary Sandy lookalike contest.

[The concert’s the all important plot point because if that event fails, like the infamous turkey drop from the TV series often alluded to in Myer’s project, Mr. Carlson’s mother’s going to convert the station into an all-news format.]

Unfortunately, too, Kagney Linn Karter plays McLane’s girlfriend, and I say that only because she’s around just long enough for some requisite eye candy and the opening sex scene with him then is never seen, never heard from again. Which is too bad. Karter, if you saw her in Ryder’s porn riff of Married With Children, is a sex bomb capable of taking out major cities. One of those chicks you just can’t take your eyes off of, this girl is flat-out pretty, and her flair for comedy’s already been proven.

With Herb Tarlek, Myers must have raided another lookalike contest because Ralph Lyons is on the nose as this oblivious character down to the hair, the matching white belt and shoes, the knit lime green slacks and thoroughly obnoxious plaid sports coat. Seriously, this is how they dressed in the Seventies- ask any disco-driven used car salesman. Herb also wants to take Jennifer out, but she tells him she couldn’t date a guy who thinks plaid is a color, which is a pretty funny line.

Instead they wind up doing it on her desk and rewardingly Lyons deposits a non-plaid molten river of white lava down Brooke’s inviting ass crack. A precious freeze frame moment.

When the concert tickets are discovered missing, it’s then Dr. Johnny’s mission to hold the winners [Faye Reagan and Jackie Daniels] at bay- sexually- until they’re recovered. Which is where the 45-minute version of In a Gadda Da Vida probably would have come in handy as Dr. Johnny, while on air, does what a lot of disc jockeys probably did in the history of radio except we were never clued to it. In an earlier bit, Tee Reel as Venus Flytrap, enhances that long-held suspicion with a similar scene including a very sexy-looking Andy San Dimas.

Now, being a good looking broad, Jennifer’s obviously got the ins with every celebrity on the planet so a mere phone call to the leader of the rock group which is doing the concert solves the problem of the tickets- but not before Les’s Scott Lyons and Holly Heart in their search for them find love, as well, on a desk top.

Shakespeare might have wrapped up the loose ends with a similar all’s well that ends well conclusion but perhaps less graphically. Yeah, on second thought, he probably coulda used a Kagney Linn Karter.
