ROSEVILLE, California – from www.fox40.com – What do you get when you cross a former porn star with a Christian youth group? On Sunday night in Rosevile the answer was: A POWERFUL MESSAGE.
Shelley Lubben told a hard luck story heard too many times; a runaway, a prostitute, a porn star all by the age of 18. “I’m thinking God is going to send me some rich guy to get me out of this, we always think God is going to show up a certain way. And what happened was I caught genetal herpes, a non curable disease” she said.
Right now, you’re probably thinking; what could an ex-porn star have in common with a bunch of kids from the suburns. Lubben is quick to respond “ADDICTION!”
“First of all I’m going to help these kids stop doing pornography because the largest group for viewing pornography is ages 12-to-17.”
Lubben left a her of pronography, addiction and abuse at twenty six. But, for the people at Adventure Church her story is symbolic of the choices and consequences all young people face.
College Pastor Richard Jett put it this way, “If we’re not being real with ourselves and others about our struggles,we could all go down that same path.”
Lubben talks with a passion. A passion that trascends sex, age and culture. 19 year old Nicholus Burgess, a freckle faced red head, was inspired by her story and her persence, “I actually it’s amazing, She’s an amazing woman of God, I can feel it.”
Now the mother of three daughters, Lubben belives better parenting would’ve made a difference, “All I wanted was to hear my dad say I love you.”
“They were bad people” she says. But like so many from that generation, they didn’t know how to be better parents. “If I’d been taught values, and to love myself, to see myself do great things, I’d never have done pornography, never.
Today, Shelley Lubben works as a motivational speaker and a counselor.
