from www.philebrity.com – The TLA Video may have closed its doors on both South Street and Spring Garden, but here’s one area where the company is succeeding wildly: Porn.
TLA’s irreverent porn blog, POPPORN (borderline NSFW), has now received nine AVN 2010 nominations for their first two site-produced adult features (produced and distributed by Zero Tolerance and 3rd Degree) POPPORN: The Guide to Making Fuck(in the Best Comedy, Best Non-Sex Performance- Spock BUCKTON, and Best Editing categories) and TMSleaze (the Best Group Sex Scene-Tori Black, Francesca Lé, Ben English & Anthony Rosano, Best Non-Sex Performance- MIke Quasar, Best Online Marketing Campaign, Best Overall Marketing Campaign, Best Packaging Innovation, Best Parody categories).
From the looks of it, The Guide to Making Fuck doesn’t have a chance of taking home the trophy when they’re up against other nominees like Korporate Kougars (Penthouse/Pulse) and Who’s Nailin’ Paylin? (Hustler Video) in the Best Comedy category.
A Philebrity office conversation ensued about the sad reality of the TLA’s demise because of online distribution companies like Netflix, but a little bit of research has shown that the same hardships that sunk TLA also threaten adult video sales.
In an article on AllBusiness.com, Steven Hirsch, a co-founder and co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment (clearly NSFW) was quoted, “We have to face it head on and look at other avenues to create revenue… Just five years ago, 80 percent of Vivid’s business came from DVD sales. Last year, it was about 30 percent.”
In the meantime, “Meat Ball” (one of the contributors to POPPORN) is beside himself with humility and gratitude, in keeping with standard awards ceremony practice. “Who knew that less than a decade later I’d not only work in the porno business, but actually be somehow connected to a movie that would somehow find itself up for a handful of the porn world’s most noteworthy (as far as I know) awards?… All of us here at POPPORN are honored.” Congratulations, POPPORN.
