from www.pasadenastarnews.com – Adult film star and sex educator Jessica Drake fielded questions from Pasadena City College students Wednesday in Professor Hugo Schwyzer’s “Navigating Pornography” class, which has attracted questions of its own in recent weeks from a wary administration.

Drake’s talk comes on the heels of a visit to Schwyzer’s class from porn superstar James Deen last month, which caused an uproar at the school after PCC administrators told Schwyzer he hadn’t filed the proper permits to open up the event to the public as he had originally planned.

This time around, Schwyzer told the class Wednesday, he received only one “nervous call” from an administrator making sure the event was for students only, and received some complaints from the community.

Drake, 38, spoke to approximately 40 students about her experience breaking into the porn industry at age 25 after working as a stripper in Texas while in college, as well as her recent transition from being just a performer to going back to school to become a sex educator. Though she hasn’t completed her schooling yet, she has already produced 10 educational videos in a series she plans to continue until she “runs out of ideas” called “Jessica Drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex. ”

“I’m going to school now to become a sex coach and a licensed sex educator, and part of my curriculum was to watch instructionals that have basically been around since the beginning of time,” Drake said. “What I noticed was it seemed like there were two kinds, the ones that gave a lot of medical information and anatomy and then there were another kind where people were talking to the camera while have sex about how great that sex was. I tried to create something kind of in the middle.”

From her own experiences learning about sex and the questions she has heard working in the adult industry, Drake said she thought it was important to put out a series of educational videos that fill in the gaps in traditional sex education.

“I think more realistic, real sexual education is what we need,” Drake said. “I had a lot of unanswered questions about my sexuality when I was young, and when I started having relationships, especially my first sexual relationship, I was lost, as I’m sure a lot of other people are. … It’s this gap in what parents are teaching to their kids.” And, she added, classes like Schwyzer’s are another opportunity for students to explore important issues that can often be shoved under the rug.

“I think it’s necessary, I think it’s something that should be integrated in everyone’s curriculum, especially while they are in college,” Drake said. “I wish I had had it. ”

Alexandra Tanks, 24, a former PCC student who sat in on Schwyzer’s class Wednesday, said she enjoyed Drake’s talk Wednesday because it gave her an opportunity to ask questions she couldn’t ask anyone else.

“For me it wasn’t wanting to learn about porn, it was talking to someone in the industry about their views on these issues,” Tanks said. “Where else in the world are you going to ask these questions? I think it is important to have a safe environment like this class. ”

Drake also touched on some of the political issues surrounding the adult film industry in recent months, including her opposition to Los Angeles County’s recently approved Measure B, which requires condoms on porn shoots. In the first test of the new law, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation filed a complaint this week alleging that actors at Chatsworth porn company Immoral Productions have been shooting scenes without condoms.

Another law proposed by Assemblyman Isadore Hall, III, D-Los Angeles, in February, seeks to expand the regulation to all film shoots in California.

Drake actively campaigned against Measure B last year, even filming a public service announcement with Deen.

“I think that it doesn’t stop at just condoms,” said Drake, adding that her contracting company Wicked Productions already requires condoms in every porn shoot. “As soon as the government can tell me what to have inside my body, that is a very big problem. It’s always been my choice to use condoms, but everybody has a different comfort level. ”

Despite his run-ins with the administration of late, tenured self-described “porn professor” Schwyzer said he hopes to continue to bring in guest speakers from the porn industry and hopes to host a public event next year – with the proper permits.

“I’d like to do a symposium, an afternoon with the adult industry,” he said. “One of the things we talk about all the time is that the enemy that we are always fighting is shame, and that’s the reason why I created this course and the reason why we do everything here.”
