“Vegas is Amateur Night Compared to Berlin”

Porn Valley- On his KSEX show Thursday night, Tony Batman had on Scott McGowan from www.eyeonadult.com. McGowan attended the Venus show in Berlin and offered a report. McGowan said, never having seen an international trade show, the Venus show blew his mind.

“Something that’s specifically for fans like Erotica LA, it’s really a far cry from what’s going on in Germany,” said McGowan. “It’s totally different. In Germany and Europe sex isn’t a dirty thing. You can open up a newspaper and see a nude body. When you walk into the show in Berlin, the first thing that you notice- especially on the day they open every thing up to the consumers- there are live sex shows everywhere. Girls up on stage pounding dildos into themselves, girls having live sex on stage. It’s really kind of a culture shock if you’re not used to seeing this. It’s fucking controversial.”

McGowan noted that despite the competition among businesses there was a camaraderie at the show.

“It wasn’t about hey look who I am, it’s hey, look, at my product. When you’re in Las Vegas there’s this whole, really pretentious vibe. You don’t know who I am? Who the fuck are you not to know who I am?” Co-host Monica Mayhem was very much in agreement on McGowan’s last comments.

Batman noted that in Vegas there’s a lot of after parties and that things get wild.

“That can’t really be put into press- the things that we do in the middle of the night,” said Batman wondering what Berlin had to offer. McGowan said a good example was Evil Angel’s party at a fetish club called Insomnia.

“They actually did a screening for the new Fashionista’s movie,” said McGowan. “This is a real fetish club, the real fucking deal and when people show up they expect some real kinky shit to go on.”

McGowan said people who came to this party left business behind. “It was a devil-may-care attitude. This is real life to them; they don’t have to hold back like we do in LA. There’s the big difference.”

Asked what in America might compare, McGowan said nothing really with the possible exception of the Exotic Erotic show in San Francisco.

“Which I imagine might compare from all the indications I’ve been given from other people,” he added. Personally, McGowan said he’d rather be in an atmosphere where people felt free and did what they wanted rather than be bound by the strict standards in the states.

“But I’m not going to shoot America’s middle finger and say everything sucks in America and everything’s cool in Europe. That’s not true. I’m just waiting for the day when it’s not so taboo here; not only the people but us [the adult industry] in general- we’ve got a lot of things to get over in this industry.” I really do look forward to that day. I think it’ll happen one day. I don’t think it’s going to happen any time soon.”

Mayhem said it would happen if people decided to explore the rest of the world.

McGowan admitted he’s been openly critical of AVN in the past and its trade show.

“They need to have a bigger presence at this show to see how a trade show really fuckin’ works. That thing we see in Vegas is amateur night by comparison to what’s going on.

Since AVN’s Peter Warren was in the studio, Batman had him talk to McGowan. Warren, who conceded that a lot of people bag on AVN, said he didn’t know who repped AVN in Berlin.

McGowan said he saw Gia Jordan running around snapping photos.

“There’s an intangible thing about Berlin,” said McGowan. “One thing I did notice- there wasn’t this cloud hanging over the convention.”

In hearing McGowan make his comparisons, Warren wondered if it was the spectacle in Berlin that was bigger or the out in the open sexual acts.

McGowan said it wasn’t just the sex acts.

“Everyone just had a smile on their face, everyone just seemed genuinely happy,” said McGowan. “Especially the consumers. But I was super impressed with that. And the cross-section of fans is a lot different. There were a lot of young single women that were there by themselves or a gaggle of two or three girls that came to see the show. There was a lot of intangibles like that.”
