from www.marketwatch.com- Veterans of the Consumer Electronics Show recall the conference long took place at the same time as an adult-entertainment convention. Those days are gone, but at least one supplier in a product category associated with the “other” event will be making a cameo appearance at this year’s CES.

That would be Standard Innovation Corp., an Ottawa-based company known for a product called the We-Vibe. Danny Osadca, the company’s CEO, refers to it as device for the “sexual health and wellness” industry. Some others would call it a vibrator, albeit one with a distinctive shape and design intended to encourage use by couples.

Whatever the name, the We-Vibe seems to be a hit. Osadca says it has generated well over $100 million in revenue, with around two million customers.

How did Standard Innovation become a CES exhibitor? A spokeswoman for the show says there was no formal policy change to admit such products.

Rather, the company became an entrant in a CES-affiliated competition called the Last Gadget Standing, in which products submitted by entrants are reviewed by a panel of judges. There is an initial selection of 25 devices, which is latter trimmed to the 10 most promising.

A new product by Standard Innovation called the Thrill made the initial cut. “We just barely didn’t make the Top Ten,” Osadca says.

Those that did make the cut include the Samsung Galaxy Camera and the Galaxy Note II mobile device.

Robin Raskin, who oversees the competition and founded a company called Living in Digital Times, said Standard Innovation’s product was viewed like all the others on the merits of its technology and engineering. “The judges were really intrigued by a different way of looking at a problem,” she says.

She noted that such products increasingly seem to fit a broader trend that is marrying electronics with health and fitness, a major category of devices represented at CES this year. “There is incredible innovation,” she says.

CES attendees looking for more products like Standard Innovation’s have the option of returning to Vegas for the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo, which opens Jan. 17. After years of occupying facilities near CES, such as the Sands Convention Center, the show opted for a different date and a different venue–the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
