Utah’s sin tax on strip clubs/escort services

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah lawmakers want a sin tax. They have passed legislation to levy a special 10-percent tax on strip clubs and escort services.

The state Senate approved the plan Tuesday, while the state House gave its OK to a similar measure two weeks ago.

But not all in the legislature are keen on taxing adult entertainment. Republican House member Gregory Hughes calls it dirty money. He says the government shouldn’t try to tax an industry it doesn’t condone.

Sex-industry lobbyist and attorney Andrew McCullough charges the proposed tax is unconstitutional. He threatens to sue if the strip tax goes into effect.
