Porn Industry Hails Move to Postpone .XXX Domains

from www.laweekly.com – Implementation of the “.xxx” domain name suffix was delayed by the international organization responsible for such things. Darn. We need this. Because a name like YouPorn (.com) isn’t quite clear enough for us.

ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) postponed its decision of .xxx domains during its meeting this week in Cartagena, Columbia.

The San Fernando Valley-based porn industry hailed the move, noting that its been fighting the domain level for fear that he U.S. government would use it to ghettoize online porn and make web-based smut move there to protect children from accidentally coming across it.

Diane Duke [pictured], director of the Canoga Park-based porn lobby called the Free Speech Coalition, states:

The .xxx “proposal will cost adult businesses millions and compromise the online adult industry. As the industry’s trade association it is our responsibility to guard against these types of threats.”

The coalition claims that ICM Registry, the company that would be responsible for doling out .xxx domain names, reneged on some promises, including …

… the promise it made to the adult community and allow adult businesses to park their domain names for a nominal fee. However, ICM plans to provide that opportunity for mainstream companies.

ICM issued its own statement indicating it had an agreement with ICANN to go forward with the .xxx names — just not right away.

What does all this mean for you, the one-handed web surfer? Nothing, really. Because even if and when .xxx goes forward, some porn merchants will avoid it. And even if it’s mandated as a must-have domain for U.S.-based smut peddlers (god bless), they’ll find a way around it.

Now get back to work. We hear there are some new videos on Fleshbot (.com).
