Porn Valley- Wednesday afternoon I chatted with Arynn Starr who heads up Starlight Pictures. Starr recently cut a deal with Defiance Films which is going to begin distributing Starr’s product.
“We signed a one-year exclusive distribution deal with them,” says Starr who got into the business, herself, about three years ago selling product. Then she felt it was time to start her own company.
“After becoming head of sales I got my hands into the production side and graphic arts dealing with the boxcovers,” Starr says. “So I got to see all of it while I was there and got my hands into every aspect of the business. I made some really great contacts and figured it was time to start on my own with some really good people.
“Our first release is next month and we’re going to do one a month from then on,” she added. Starr says she contacted Defiance figuring it was worth a shot realizing after seeing Defiance’s product how quickly they got to the top for being so new.
“We figured we’d give them a shot and see if they wanted to take a chance and they did,” Starr continued. “We’re doing all-amateur but it’s shot in Hi-Def.” Starr’s company has been open a little under a year and a half, filming and shooting and getting everything ready for their big move.
“We shoot everything from threesomes to anal, interracial, gonzo- we do it all,” notes Starr. “We’re female-owned and we think there’s a definite difference compared to most of the other companies out there in that we’re not X-talent. We’re not the typical X-talent going into ownership.”
Starr says her company is shooting mainly in the Valley in houses and apartments.
“It’s no high-end 4 grand a day house,” she observes. “Most of the performers are brand new girls who have never done anything before and probably about less than a third of them are girls who haven’t made a name for themselves as yet. Like one girl we have -Deja Daire. She’s pretty well known now. We shot her in the very beginning before she was doing too much. We get a lot of these girls their very first time.”
Starr’s directing most of the product and has a “partner-in-crime” named Cyn who does all the photography.
“And we have two other girls who rotate and come in to help us on set- it’s all females.”Starr said the game plan was to shoot in the beginning to acquire a catalogue of product then contact some distributors to get a feel of whom they wanted to go with.
“When it comes to distribution there’s not many decent companies to go to,” she observes. “Being where I came from, and one of my other girls came from, we could have sold everything ourselves. But it’s a matter of do we take that on and continue to film? It wouldn’t make the product as good if we tried to do all of that. So we found someone on the distribution end that allows us to concentrate on making our movies.
“We talked to a few other companies. We had one deal in place last year but that one fell through. It wasn’t working out between us. I just didn’t like where they were going with everything. And then immediately after that, I got another deal in place but after a month or two of dealing with them it wasn’t going smoothly. We had to drop them and then we found Defiance. We wanted to make sure our product fit in with what they have, that we liked them and could keep going on for years.”
Before she got into porn, Starr was in the construction industry.
“Dealing with lumber of a different sort,” I tell her.
“It’s definitely hands on in both aspects,” Starr laughs.
