The adult cam industry has become increasingly mainstream, as evidenced by a new streaming series on Apple TV+ that features a story about cam stars.

Cam Stars in Mainstream Media

In Margo's Got Money Troubles, which debuted April 15 on Apple TV+, Hollywood girl-next-door Elle Fanning stars in the title role, in a story about the adult cam industry—proof that livestreaming adult content has become as mainstream as Main Street will allow.

The streaming series is based on the novel of the same name by popular girlcore author Rufi Thorpe, about the daughter of a former pro-wrestler and former Hooter's waitress. When not-old-enough-to-drink Margo gets pregnant by her English professor, she finds she has limited employment options and a mouth to feed.

The eight episode series' A-list cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer (whose husband David E. Kelley is executive producer), Nicole Kidman, Marcia Gay Harden, Greg Kinnear, Nick Offerman and rapper Rico Nasty, among others.

A Brief History of Adult Webcams

Even before the Covid-19 pandemic forced more adult content creators to work from home, adult camming – most often earning money by streaming yourself performing a sexual or arousing act – comprised a large part of the global porn industry.

It was estimated that the sex cam industry generated $2 billion in 2018. That figure is likely to have risen since, largely thanks to the popularity of female cammers on sites such as Chaturbate, CamSoda and Bongacams.

The Rise of Female Cammers

While women dominate, there’s an increasing amount of gay male content. Trans performers are gaining more visibility too, with dedicated sites such as Tgirlscams.com launching, and more mainstream cam sites promoting transgender categories within their sites.
