DALLAS — Dallas City Hall officials on Wednesday promised tougher restrictions on sexually oriented businesses after a 12-year-old was found performing as a dancer at a strip club.
Dallas police said that over a two-week period last year, the sixth-grader danced at Diamonds Cabaret on Walnut Ridge. They also say they found a 17-year-old girl working in the club in January.
The city ordinance that regulates sexually oriented businesses currently does not allow authorities to revoke the license of such a business for employing someone under 18.
“A lot of people were infuriated with what happened and I totally agree with that,” said Dallas Councilmember Elba Garcia.
An organization that helps women get out of the adult entertainment business told city leaders that the ordinances must change.
“We have 14 women currently who started as teenagers, we have 40 women in our program,” said Candace Cain, Executive Director, of New Friends, New Life.
The mayor said his plan would specifically prohibit minors at adult businesses and allow licenses to be revoked after a single violation.
“I’m happy to say to everybody, in the space of three weeks, the situation will be identified, it will be resolved,” said Mayor Tom Leppert. “It will allow the police chief to revoke the license if there is a minor that is at these premises … that’s employed at these premises or performing at these premises.”
