Adam & Eve has released the results of a recent survey indicating that a majority of American adults believe their reproductive rights are being curtailed. The survey, conducted in March 2024, gathered responses from over 1,000 adults aged 18 and up.
Survey Findings on Reproductive Rights
The survey, sponsored by Adam & Eve and conducted by an independent third-party company, asked American adults if they felt their reproductive rights were being taken away. Forty-eight percent of respondents indicated they felt their reproductive rights are definitely being taken away. This sentiment was reported by 44% of males and 50% of females.
An additional 23% of those surveyed stated they felt their reproductive rights are somewhat being taken away, with 25% of males and 22% of females expressing this view. In contrast, only 22% of respondents did not feel their reproductive rights were being taken away, comprising 24% of males and 22% of females. Seven percent of respondents were unsure.
The survey was conducted in Hillsborough, N.C., and aimed to study sexual preferences and practices. Adam & Eve resident sexologist Dr. Jenni Skyler commented on the findings, stating that reproductive rights encompass the ability to decide whether and when to have children. She further explained that these rights refer to the freedom to control decisions regarding contraception, sterilization, abortion, and childbirth. Dr. Skyler encouraged adults to vote to protect their reproductive and human rights.
Chad Davis, Director of Marketing for Adam & Eve, noted that the company began by providing condoms by mail and continues to offer a variety of condoms to support access to affordable birth control. He encouraged adults to explore their sexuality within their comfort levels and boundaries.
Historical Context and Related Surveys
Adam & Eve has a history of conducting annual sex surveys to gauge the changing sexual attitudes and values of American adults. In October 2018, Adam & Eve released results from a survey asking over 1,000 adults if they or their partner had ever had an abortion and how they felt about it. That survey found that 25% of women and 20% of men reported having undergone an abortion in their lifetime. Of these, 27% of women and 24% of men expressed regret about their decision. Just over 49% of women and 37% of men reported feeling relief with their choice, while 24% of women and 39% of men felt indifferent.
Dr. Jenni Skyler also commented on the 2018 abortion survey, stating that reproductive health is a basic human right. She noted that it is encouraging that the number of abortions had been declining, but emphasized the importance of the right to make this individual choice being legal and accessible to all. Dr. Skyler also highlighted that the emotional result of terminating a pregnancy can vary from grief to relief, and stressed the importance of accurate information and counseling support throughout the process.
Another survey released by Adam & Eve in February 2019 focused on condom use among American adults. This survey, also involving over 1,000 adults, found that 37% of respondents (40% of men and 35% of women) reported condoms as a regular part of their sexual activity, while 63% (60% of men and 64% of women) said no. Among those who used condoms, 34% of women requested them for personal protection, compared to 23% of men. Twenty-six percent of males who used condoms did so because their partners asked them to, compared to 15% of women. Fifty percent of both males and females admitted to using condoms for both themselves and their partners. Dr. Skyler described these condom use numbers as "alarmingly low," noting that while long-term monogamous relationships may safely opt out, condoms remain the best way to protect against unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
