I have a pond in my backyard and, many mornings, I’ll go out there and hand-feed the fish with either gourmet fish food or bananas – they can eat fruit, you know; watermelon is their favorite.
I have about 20 koi in my big pond, and some smaller ones in an indoor aquarium. Just being around them relaxes me.
But there was a lot of trial and error – and a lot of dead fish – before my husband and got to where we are now. Here are some tips that will help you avoid the mistakes we made.
Size matters … on the pond, that is
Our first pond wasn’t deep enough. That wasn’t a problem in the summer, but when the weather got colder, so did the water near the top of the pond. Having a deep pond minimum of 3 feet will give the fish somewhere warm to hang out during the winter, that way if the pond freezes there will still be water below for the koi to hibernate.
Bigger isn’t always better … where the filter is concerned
When we first installed the outdoor pond, our pump was too big for the filter and it sucked the fish up to the waterfall and some of the fish got chewed up by the filter. Now, we’ve installed a big grate and bypassed the filter and used the top pond to make a manmade filter using lava rock and plants to avoid this from happening again.
Bubbles are always nice
Bubbles provide oxygen to the fish. We installed the waterfall for that purpose and we have the water fall through lava rocks, which are good filters. The air that the waterfall produces flowing into the lower pond where the koi are kept makes these air bubbles.
No shallow ledges – ever!
One of the mistakes we made with the first pond was making the ledges too shallow. As a result, the big koi started mating and when they would get excited and flop around, they hit the ledges, which was dangerous for the fish and painful to watch.
Don’t skimp on the food
Koi fish can eat fruit like bananas, but it’s important to spend money on the best food possible. We use a specially formulated brand that has certain vitamins that make the colors and their shine really come out. That added a nice touch to one sex scene I did with two other girls – you could see the fish in the background.
I have one fish right now that looks like a skeleton – except it’s now growing a big orange spot on its face.
Koi are cute – and also babe magnets
Koi are not only relaxing to feed, but they can help your love life. I think women find a guy who spends time taking care of animals very sexy.
