from www.wtop.com – Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth is being offered a plea deal in his misdemeanor sexual abuse case.
In a letter to Haynesworth attorney, filed in D.C. Superior Court, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has offered Haynesworth the opportunity to plead guilty to simple assault, rather than face trial for the charge on which he was indicted.
In the filing, prosecutor Heide Herrmann says the offer will expire May 17.
The document provides new details in the government’s case against Haynesworth, who allegedly groped a waitress at the W Hotel in Northwest D.C., after he attended a private birthday party on the hotel’s rooftop P.O.V. Lounge.
According to prosecutors, the waitress saw Hayneworth pull out his debit card to pay, while her hands were filled with dirty dishes.
“She told the defendant that she would ‘drop these off real quick,’ referring to the plates, and come back to take the defendant’s card,” the filing states.
Prosecutors say Hayneworth was insistent, and pushed the card toward the woman, as she “looked up and down at herself, as if wondering where defendant expected her to put it.”
Haynesworth “put the debit card down the center of the (woman’s) bra, in the space between her bra and her skin,” the document says. “As he moved his hand toward her breast, defendant smiled and said words to the effect of, ‘Can I do that?’ or ‘Is that okay?’ (The woman) told defendant to stop.”
According to prosecutors, “Despite (the woman’s) requests for him to stop, defendant continued to move his hand over, ultimately moving his fingers in circles,” around her breast.
In the prosecution’s synopsis of events, when the waitress arrived at the cash register she swiped Haynesworth’s debit card on the $825.53 bill. His debit card was declined.
He produced another debit card to successfully pay the bill, which had been reduced to $811.23 because of a disputed drink.
In the prosecution’s document, after the incident, a security agent for the hotel spoke with Haynesworth, and he replied “I didn’t touch her.”
Hours later, Haynesworth returned to the W Hotel.
“As detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department approached to interview him, defendant spontaneously told them “I know what this is about, she is upset I have a white girlfriend. I couldn’t tell you the last time I dated a black girl. She was trying to get with me.”
According to prosecutors’ document, Haynesworth was unwilling to be interviewed further.
Haynesworth’s attorney did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
