Nassau- With her son’s body still awaiting burial, Anna Nicole Smith “exchanged vows” with her longtime lawyer Howard K. Stern aboard a luxury boat in the Bahamas in a ceremony that is “not legally binding,” another lawyer for the ex-Playboy Playmate said yesterday.
The bizarre “commitment” caper aboard a 50-foot catamaran occurred Thursday – just 18 days after 20-year-old Daniel Smith died suddenly in his mom’s maternity ward room.
Daniel Smith suffered a heart malfunction caused by a combination of two antidepressants and methadone. The Daily News has learned that he did not have prescriptions for two of the three drugs.
His embalmed body remains in a Nassau mortuary. “He’s still here. We’re awaiting instructions,” a spokeswoman for Butler’s Funeral Home and Crematorium told the Daily News yesterday.
But Anna Nicole Smith, 38, and the 37-year-old Stern – who says he’s the father of her new baby girl, Danilynne Hope – apparently chose to celebrate love rather than deal with death.
The couple “exchanged vows before God,” while their posh rented boat was anchored off Blackbeard’s Cay in Nassau, but they didn’t obtain a marriage license, Smith’s Bahamian lawyer, Michael Scott, told The Associated Press.
“It was not a formal, legal arrangement,” Scott said.
Speedboats carried Dom Perignon Champagne and other party supplies out to the catamaran, according to Star magazine.
After the ceremony, the buxom bride, who was clad in a pink bikini, and her partying guests took a swim around the boat, Star reported.
Smith’s ex-squeeze Larry Birkhead – who insists he’s the baby’s father – said news of the ceremony didn’t surprise him.
“That’s not a grief-stricken mother. He [Stern] wants to take over paternity and that’s his maneuver,” Birkhead told Star. “Nothing shocks me now. It gets crazier and crazier.”
