Miami – from www.middletownjournal.com – — Another Miami University sorority is facing suspension after complaints that its members littered the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center with alcohol containers, urine and vomit.
The Alpha Xi Delta sorority is facing a two-year suspension following a spring formal it held March 26 at the Freedom Center in Cincinnati.
A letter sent from the Freedom Center to Miami describes excessive drinking, smoking in the museum, vomiting and urinating all over the rest rooms and destruction to the dance floor.
“The day after the so called ‘formal’ Freedom Center staff was still finding hidden bottles of alcohol and new places where students had vomited from having too much to drink,” Rhonda Miller, private event coordinator stated in the letter.
Miami University President David Hodge sent a letter today, May 12, stating Alpha Xi Delta will be suspended from campus for two years. However, since the sorority is appealing the ruling, the final decision will be made in a couple weeks.
Hodge’s letter comes days the Freedom Center is expected to be in the spotlight as the Cincinnati Reds host Major League Baseball’s annual Civil Rights Game is Saturday night, May 15.
Earlier this week it was announced that Miami University’s Pi Beta Phi sorority was suspended for one year. That punishment was handed down following damage and misconduct to the Lake Lyndsay Lodge, where that sorority held its spring formal was held. That sorority did not appeal the decision.
“These recent incidents of negative behavior are deeply troubling and embarrassing,” Hodge said in the letter. “Working together with the Greek governing councils, chapter advisers, chapter membership, and the national organizations, we are determined to live up to our values.”
During Alpha Xi Delta’s event at the Freedom Center, it was clear that many students were intoxicated when they arrived and people were bringing alcohol into the event, which is not allowed, according to Paul Bernish, spokesman for the center. “Throughout the evening, they did everything to turn what should have been a positive event into a negative one,” Bernish said. “What was particularly upsetting was the abject and profound disrespect for the museum.
“The DJ quit early saying they hadn’t ever seen such horrible behavior,” Bernish said. “There wasn’t much damage, but lots of cleaning up that took the whole night since we were open the next day.”
Alpha Xi Delta will be banned from using the facility in the future, but Bernish suggested to the sorority it should come for a visit in the fall. Bernish said he would give members a tour of the museum in hopes that they could have more appreciation it.
Alpha Xi Delta wrote a formal letter to the Freedom Center apologizing for its behavior.
