Elegant Angel has released a 20th-anniversary director's cut of Axel Braun's feature film, "Compulsion." The re-release, available on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD, features new and restored footage.

A Pivotal Work Revisited

Axel Braun, who retired from adult entertainment less than a year ago, described "Compulsion" as "pivotal" when reflecting on the film. He stated that it was "the movie that took my career to a whole new level." Braun noted that prior to "Compulsion," he was known as "the son of Lasse Braun," but afterward, "people started referring to him as ‘Axel’s dad.’ It changed everything.”

Braun immersed himself in this new passion project, revisiting the film he shot for Elegant Angel in 2003. The inspiration for this endeavor was the chance to commemorate the movie’s 20th anniversary. He embarked on an emotional journey to re-edit the original 16mm film.

The special 20th-anniversary Director’s Cut became available on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD on June 21, 2024, at ElegantAngel.com, AdultEmpire.com, and AxelBraun.com. This release occurred almost a year to the day after Braun's retirement.

Braun detailed the extensive work involved in creating the new cut. He stated, "Being able to recover the original 16mm reels, thanks to the folks at Elegant Angel, and having the opportunity to revisit a project to which I am so emotionally attached, was truly an amazing experience." Over eight months, Braun remastered and color-graded the 16mm footage in 4K, made over 250 changes to the edit, replaced or re-recorded most of the music, cleaned up the audio, redesigned all the artwork, and filmed additional establishing shots. He described the process as "just as much a labor of love today as it was 20 years ago."

Original Release and Accolades

"Compulsion" was the first and only movie Elegant Angel ever shot in the 16mm format. The film earned Braun his first AVN Award, with him taking home the 2004 trophy for Best Screenplay. Braun expressed the significance of this achievement, stating, “Winning an AVN Award had been my goal since I got in the industry in 1990, and that night was a fantastic, almost surreal experience.”

The film also received the AVN Award for Best Couples Sex Scene, which was awarded to its lead actors, Ashley Long and Kurt Lockwood. "Compulsion" went on to win a total of 15 awards worldwide, including honors from organizations such as Adam Film World, XRCO, Venus Berlin, and Delta di Ve.

Braun expressed gratitude to the cast and crew who contributed to the original film. He mentioned Kurt Lockwood and Ashley Long, who "embodied so perfectly the characters I created and brought so much passion, professionalism, and dedication to the set." He also acknowledged Eli Cross, Ren Savant, Dr. Philgood, and Hank Hoffman, describing them as "all friends with whom I went on to collaborate for many years." Braun specifically thanked his mentor, Patrick Collins, who "not only believed in my crazy idea of having a gonzo company shoot a feature on film but also turned in a powerhouse, unforgettable acting performance."

Elegant Angel's Support

Elegant Angel played a role in the creation of the 20th-anniversary director's cut. Daniel Chura, Elegant Angel VP of Production, commented on the project, stating, "It was a pleasure to help Axel pursue this project." Chura added, "When I heard of Axel's intense passion for 'Compulsion,' I promised I’d do my best to make this restoration."

Braun noted that recovering the original 16mm reels was possible "thanks to the folks at Elegant Angel." Elegant Angel announced the re-release of "Compulsion," describing it as Braun’s "award-winning opus" and highlighting that the new cut presents the "star-studded story as Braun always intended."
