New York- HOWARD Stern really must be “The King of All Media.” Just hours after he complained on-air about FHM editor-at-large Jake Bronstein’s assertion that three-time FHM cover girl Beth Ostrosky is only famous because she dates Stern, Bronstein was fired.
While he may have merely stated the obvious, Bronstein’s mistake was uttering his appraisal of Ostrosky during an interview on cable channel G4TV’s “Attack of the Show” last week. After noting that Ostrosky’s covers outsell those of Halle Berry, Bronstein said, “Nobody knew who Beth Ostrosky was before she became Howard Stern’s girlfriend . . . It was a good move on her part.”
Bronstein also described interviewing Ostrosky as “a delicate situation,” saying that the first time, he pretended to be genuinely interested. But the second time, “I was like, ‘What’s the big guy [Stern] up to?’ ”
The next day, Stern played Bronstein’s comments on air. “They kind of make me sound like a total dope,” Stern complained. “She’s the first one to admit she’s only [on FHM’s cover] because she’s my girlfriend.” He then branded Bronstein a “little dicky.”
When he heard Stern was upset, Bronstein called Ostrosky, who also writes a sex advice column for FHM, and left her an apologetic message. He then booked an appearance to go back on “Attack of the Show” to deliver an on-air mea culpa.
But it was too late. FHM editor-in-chief Scott Gramling called Bronstein and told him to cancel his appearance. Then, Bronstein writes on his blog, “Two hours later, Scott left a message on my voice mail asking that I call him . . . he told me it was over. I didn’t argue. He said he had to ‘send a message that they don’t take this thing lightly.’ Then he told me how hard this was for him . . . he’d fought for me . . . and said goodbye.”
The next day, Bronstein wrote, Ostrosky called back. “She said she wouldn’t stand for it and that her and Howard would get my job back. But most importantly, she said she forgave me. I told her . . . I was just happy that she understood I’d meant no harm.”
Gramling declined comment. An FHM spokeswoman says Bronstein’s “version of why he thinks his services are no longer desired by the editors of FHM is inaccurate. We are not surprised by the inaccuracies of his latest blog entry. His comments on G4TV were equally inaccurate.”
