Brothel owner gets three years in prison

HARTFORD, Conn. — A woman convicted of running a multimillion-dollar prostitution business out of a private city club was sentenced to three years in federal prison on Monday.

Angela Moutsatsos, 49, the former owner of the Alpha Leisure & Health Club, was convicted in January of promoting prostitution and money laundering. She also admitted conspiring with others to smuggle thousands of dollars in cash into the United States from a Swiss bank account. Federal prosecutors said the club, billed as a health club, operated as a house of prostitution, and from 1998 to 2003 grossed $5.3 million and had a customer list of more than 4,600 people.

Moutsatsos, the fourth person to be convicted in the case, was charged March 30, 2004, in a 38-count indictment and pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Hartford to three of those counts.

As part of her plea bargain, she agreed to forfeit $346,104.

U.S. District Judge Robert Chatigny also sentenced Moutsatsos to three years of probation and ordered her to pay a $10,000 fine.
