Conversations with The Shylock-update

Porn Valley- Yeah, I figured you’d rather see a picture of Sandra Romain than the guy who reps her- Mark Spiegler.

I’m talking to the shylock, Mark Spiegler, on the Lurid Entertainment set this past Saturday. Spiegler’s telling me, if you’re willing to believe, that he’s never had a girl flake on him in the five years he’s been running Spiegler Girls, www.spieglergirls.com.

I find this to be an incredible track record. If you count the two years Spiegler was doing it for free, that makes seven years without sin. “It was by accident,” Spiegler says regarding his agency. “Somebody asked me to help a girl [Lisa Crawford] get work. I helped her. She sent her friends from France. They sent their friends. It was all by word of mouth.”

Spiegler will tell you, no bullshit, that European girls have “at least in the beginning” a better work ethic, hence, his willingness to rep them. “Then, of course, after a year or so they turn American and get lazy. But in the beginning they’re really good.”

Spiegler got his start in the adult business lending money to people. “Mike McCormick called me Shylock because I’m Jewish, I lend money, I quote Shakespeare, and I’m always collecting,” says Spiegler. “One time I had to collect money from Western Visuals.”

I ask Speigler if he had any luck with Elliot Segal. Spiegler says it was no problem. “I’m not saying anything but I came out with the cash.

“That’s how I got into this,” says Spiegler telling me how he lent Roy Karch money one time so he could shoot his own stuff. Spiegler, who has a degree in Economics, made his money trading stocks. He started at age 13 and by the time he was 22 made enough to retire, according to him. “I started working at 12 and saved my money and started trading stock. They call them day traders now but they didn’t have them back then. Then I didn’t do anything from 22 to 38.” Spiegler says he’s just a natural business person. “When the market crashed in ’86, in May I told my mother to get all her money out. She didn’t. It was overvalued. I bought gold-related securities. Then when the market crashed, I made 19% on it. At that point I had been watching Apple Computer. It was 56 dollars a share. It crashed and went down to 29. But they had 36 dollars a share in cash in the bank and a bunch of assets. So I bought tons of Apple Computer and made a lot of money.”

As a toliet seat economist, Spiegler says he looks at the market psychologically. “Like Orion Pictures when they filed Chapter 11. It was like 3 3/8 and dropped to under $2. It’s only a Chapter 11. I bought a ton of it and I made like 93% of the money in a day. If you’re willing to take the chance.”

So I asked Spiegler what the fuck he did for those 16 years when he did shit. “I hung out,” he answers simply. “I went to the beach. I lived in the Valley and had a place at the beach.” During the time he was a producer, Spiegler did 96 movies in four years by his tally.

“I started shooting movies with Roy [Karch] and Mike McCormick was my camera guy.” In the mean time, Spiegler put up money for other producers. He mentions some names including Greg Steele. “Then I started with David Christopher and did almost 50 movies with him, like American Cocksucking Championship. There was a ton of them.” Spiegler remembered a time where you could make $5,000 on a movie. “Then everyone started shooting with little cameras, now everybody’s a director and the price people pay for movies has dropped to where it’s not as far as I’m concerned worthwhile to shoot them. Then I got into this agent thing by accident and I couldn’t shoot movies any more because I didn’t have the time.”

Spiegler got a Best Movie nomination one time for a movie he did called Impact. “But as I told Skeeter Kerkove when he first got started, don’t get too excited about this stuff. Good or bad.”

Spiegler was the first guy to have shot Bridgette Kerkove. “I think she did one Japanese amateur thing before that,” he remembers. “I met them at the clinic in North Hollywood back then. I’m sure Skeeter remembers the movie. It was in Hollywood and she did great. It went from there. She did 204 scenes that year and started in February.”

The fact that new talent agencies seem to be popping up every day doesn’t bother Spiegler. “I try to deal with between 20 to 25 girls,” he says. “I turn girls down every day.” Asked why he’ll turn a girl down, Spiegler keeps insisting that he’s not doing it for the money. “The guy that works for me gets the most of it. The Spiegler Girls money goes to him. The thing is I want good quality girls that are reliable. I tell them this upfront and try to get a feel for them, first. Girls from Europe like Alicia Rhodes wanted to come here before. Finally Ashley Long and Angel Long said she was really good. I was, okay. But I don’t want any drug addicts. And if I think girls are doing something, I’ll drug test them. They’ll pee in a cup. I don’t care if they’re smoking pot or whatever but I don’t want them doing it at work, either.”

Spiegler remembers a girl who came to him. “She had no car. No phone. She was doing speed, this and that. She lived in a crappy place in Hollywood. Now she’s going to UCLA, has money in the bank, a car, a phone, a nice apartment.” There was another girl, Ashley Moore, whose parents kicked her out of the house.

“They said she was an alcoholic whore- a drug addict. She drank a lot and would pretty much bang anybody just for the hell of it. And her family’s really wealthy.” Spiegler says he laid the law down the first day. “I told her no drugs and I got her to quit drinking in three weeks. I drug tested her and alcohol tested her every month for like eight months. Finally her family took her back. I talk to her about every other day. She went to cosmetology school. Now she’s going to college and working a regular job.”

I suggest that Spiegler’s a one-man rehab clinic, but he says it doesn’t always turn out that way. “Some of them go the other way like Cameron Caine, Danni Woodward. Danni was a little wacky to start with, with the partying. Actually a large company in the business wanted to sign her to a contract.”

Spiegler says there was the usual drug problem and he couldn’t rep Woodward any more but the company still wanted to sign her. “But she couldn’t help herself.”

Since I hear that she does triple anals with regularity I ask Spiegler about Sandra Romain. He stresses that he’ll never recruit a girl, however. “She actually contacted me over two years ago and wanted to come here,” Spiegler says. “She was having trouble getting into the country and finally got in.”

To paraphrase Shakespeare, neither a recruiter nor a buyer of plane tickets be, is Spiegler. “I will not pay for their plane tickets because they have to have their shit a little bit together to get here,” Spiegler reasons. “That’s kind of a test. And, technically, it could be a violation of the Mann Act. Bringing them across state lines, let alone across the Atlantic.”

And therein lies another drama for Spiegler. I ask him about Ashley Long who got deported. “She didn’t list an interest-bearing checking account,” Spiegler explains. “She didn’t know. It was for a website she was doing. When you get interest you pay tax on it. No way she could do that. She didn’t know it and they red flagged her. She can come back next October.”

Spiegler says Long was going to go to school here. “She applied to college. They said you need certain visas. She went back to England to get the student visa and they said, nah, we don’t think you really want to go to school and they denied her entry into the US. She got in anyway. But then this last time they stopped her. They don’t tell you why. You don’t have rights. You’re not American. You don’t have a right to an attorney, nothing.”

Another Spiegler rule frowns on partying to intoxication. “Like Mr. Pete’s birthday party the other day,” says Spiegler, noting that there’s no getting drunk, no blowing anybody in the bathroom. “It’s just not good for business.”

Spiegler himself has only gone out with one girl in the business- Claudia Adkins. “Otherwise it ain’t good business,” he thinks. Asked what was so special about Adkins, Spiegler said she was the helpless waif-type. “Now she’s a doctor. She’s a neurologist in Russia, in Siberia. She married a patient, like a legit marriage, then came over here and found out the guy never had a job in his life. He figured he’s marrying a doctor, she’s rich. In the mean time, she’s working two jobs, having to learn English and going to school to pass the boards.”

Spiegler says Adkins was a virgin until she was 25. “She only had sex with three guys in her life. Her first scene is with, like, Ed Powers. She did anal with him and liked it so much she went from Ed Powers to Lexington Steele. She was really good, worked a bunch, saved up money and went off to the University of Indiana.”

Spiegler tends to keep in touch with his ex girls, even those he’s gotten rid of. “Cameron Caine e-mailed me a couple of days ago. Ashley Moore I talked to every other day. Melanie Jagger I talk to. Jasmin Lynn came around like three weeks ago. She’s married, pregnant and living in Arizona. A lot of them still call me.”

The girls that particularly stand out in Spiegler’s mind are those who he thinks could have been big but were fuck ups. Caine is high on that list. “She was a grifter,” laughs Spiegler. “That’s how she made her living. That’s for real- three years traveling around. She was the greatest liar you ever met.”

Spiegler says Caine had offers from Penthouse. “She had gold, natural eyes. She was really hot. She was the greatest actress. She could be doing scenes with a guy and telling him he’s the greatest and that she really loves working with him. Then she’d walk away, ah, what a jerkoff. The guys would fall in love with her. But after three or four months she got her own place and started partying. That was it. She was around another year but flaked on everybody from Suze Randall to Penthouse. She still contacts me, but the girl could have been really, really big.”
