LOS ANGELES — Author Dawn Schiller will speak about her new book, “The Road Through Wonderland: Surviving John Holmes” (Medallion Press, August 2010, $19.95), with three local events.

With forewords by actor Val Kilmer and actress Kate Bosworth, “The Road Through Wonderland” is a surreal and mesmerizing memoir about Schiller’s underage relationship to charismatic and gregarious adult film star John Holmes. Through a bizarre set of circumstances, Schiller (age 15) met Holmes (then 32) near his home in Los Angeles. At first protective, Holmes acted as her guardian. But their disquieting relationship shifted to intimacy, and Schiller’s reality was turned upside down as Holmes became steeped in drugs.

A harrowing story of survival, Schiller paints a haunting and vivid portrait of Holmes, exposing his true character apart from the man lauded by the adult film industry and in movies including “Wonderland” and “Boogie Nights.” Though her naive, teenage eyes, Schiller recalls how she was thrust into Holmes’ unpredictable world-one where he began abusing her and prostituting her for drug money, including to payback infamous drug lord Eddie Nash. Schiller also details the aftermath of Holmes’ involvement in the famed Wonderland Murders and how she eventually broke free of Holmes, turning him into the FBI.
