Dirty magazine, an independent publication, has launched Dirty TV, a new video channel. This expansion aims to bring the magazine’s editorial content to a lo-fi film format, combining interviews, documentary reporting, cultural criticism, and original entertainment.
Dirty TV: An Extension of Print and a Platform in Its Own Right
Dirty TV is designed to function as both an extension of Dirty magazine and a standalone platform. The channel features long-form interviews, documentary reporting, cultural criticism, and original entertainment, utilizing what a representative described as "the immediacy and visual language of DIY media." The magazine has compiled an archive of conversations with individuals from various fields, including the adult industry, labor, literature, film, skateboarding, and independent media.
Interview subjects featured on Dirty TV include labor organizer Chris Smalls; performers Angela White and Abella Danger; Jenkem Magazine founder Ian Michna; Amazon worker Tristan Lion; Bronx Girls Skate; performer/directors Siouxsie Q and Michael Vegas; porn historian Noelle Perdue; novelist Allie Rowbottom; comedians Rachel Wolfson and Steve-O; Bam Margera’s parents April and Phil and other members of the Jackass crew; and director and producer Lilly Wachowski.
Ripley Soprano, Dirty publisher and co-editor-in-chief, described Dirty TV as "like a liberated Girls Gone Wild or an anarcho-queer Jackass," while also noting the inclusion of "serious journalism." Soprano mentioned coverage of hunger strikes at Delaney Hall ICE facility and the unionization of Amazon workers. The project deliberately avoids the standardized aesthetics of digital publishing, opting for an analog approach. Soprano stated, "We want the journalism to be good and the production to occasionally look like shit. Serious journalism, lo-fi porn aesthetics. That’s basically the brief."
Development and Creative Direction
Dirty TV was developed by Soprano and executive producer Hipp, with the goal of "building a video world around the magazine and the community that has grown alongside it." Maia Raymer, Dirty magazine’s creative director, designed the Dirty TV logo. The channel's development involves Camila Chica, Aurora O'Greenfield, Melinda May, Trinity Noone, Stephanie Reid, and Felipe Gouviea, among others.
The channel launched with a trailer edited by Kenneth Bachor. This trailer introduces members of the "Dirty TV Universe," including adult performers Small Hands, Maddie V Baby, and Angel Youngs. The trailer serves as an introduction to the "character hosts, shenanigans and sex-appeal that define the project."
Soprano emphasized that "Print and IRL community is still the heart of Dirty." However, Soprano also noted that a magazine cannot capture everything, stating, "Sometimes you need to hear somebody talk. Sometimes you need to watch somebody wipe out skating. Sometimes somebody needs to take their clothes off. Sometimes something needs to be lit on fire." Dirty TV is currently available on YouTube.
