Florida- Former Mets ace Dwight (Doc) Gooden was arrested yesterday after he allegedly punched his fiance̩ in the face Рthe latest brush with the law for the retired baseball star.

Gooden was charged with domestic violence battery after cops said he whacked flight attendant Monique Moore during a fight in her Tampa apartment just before 1 a.m.

“They were having a verbal argument and she picks up a headset and throws it at him,” said Laura McElroy, a Tampa police spokeswoman. “He punched her and she calls 911.”

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner declined to comment on the arrest of Gooden, 40, who works in the team’s front office.

Gooden, who seemed to have tamed his demons in recent years, was held without bail and was expected to appear in court this morning.

Moore suffered bruises but refused treatment, cops said. Police said they didn’t know what the two were fighting about.

Police described Moore as Gooden’s ex-wife, and Gooden has introduced her to friends as his wife in recent months. But no official record of their marriage could be found.

Gooden was married for 16 years to the former Monica Harris, but they divorced last year amid accusations he siphoned money from the sale of their Tampa-area home.

Moore was cited in divorce-court papers as Gooden’s “paramour,” and was seen with an engagement ring last summer. Gooden testified in court last year that they had broken up.

Gooden was one of the highest-flying stars of the Mets’ 1986 championship team.

But even as he looked like a sure bet for the Hall of Fame, Gooden was destroying himself with drugs and booze.

He overslept for the Amazin’s World Series ticker-tape parade in 1986, and underwent rehab for cocaine use the next season.

In 1994, he was suspended for two months after testing positive for coke. Steinbrenner later picked Gooden off the scrap heap, and Gooden rewarded him by pitching a no-hitter for the Bombers on May 14, 1996.

He retired in 2001 and has steered mostly clear of trouble since. Cops charged him with DWI in 2002, but the charges were reduced to reckless driving.
