Memphis-The die hard Elvis fans at Graceland know the name. “I’ve seen it quite often in the books I’ve read about Elvis.” Drayton “Beecher” Smith is a noted probate lawyer who made a name for himself as Elvis Presley’s attorney. He’s also an award winning author. Now the feds are trying to add child pornography charges to his resume that already spans several pages long. “It shows that people who span the spectrum engage in this activity. They can be of any type,” U.S. Attorney David Kustoff says.
The feds say they caught 57-year-old “Beecher” Smith downloading and distributing kiddie porn on his computer. It’s part of a broader operation called “Project Safe Childhood” as the feds try to crack down on child predators. They picked up Smith at his Memphis home without incident he was taken to federal court and later released, but not without some restrictions. “He will be required to where an electronic monitoring device. He had to turn over his passport,” Kustoff says.
Smith was back at work at his law office in East Memphis late Wednesday afternoon knowing his career could take a dramatic turn from the days when he represented the “King of Rock and Roll. Smith faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. We’ve just confirmed through several sources that Smith’s fraternal twin brother– Vassar Williams Smith is serving 68 years in a California prison for possession of child pornography and continous sexual abuse of children under 14.
Meanwhile Beecher Smith will likely be arraigned in the coming days. We should also mention Smith is still on a small retainer with Elvis Presley Enterprises.
