Erotic Professionals & Allies United (EPA United), an adult industry voter advocacy organization, has partnered with adult star Cherie DeVille to launch a series of social media videos encouraging voting in the upcoming election.
EPA United's Voter Mobilization Efforts
EPA United is one of several non-partisan groups founded by sex workers within the past few months, aiming to mobilize the sex worker vote this election season. Co-founder Savannah Sly created EPA United not only to inspire sex workers to vote but also "to show lawmakers how many of us there are." Estimates suggest the number of sex workers in America is around 2 million.
Another group, Hot2Vote, was founded by adult actress and director Siouxsie Q. Siouxsie Q has partnered with Streamate, a webcam streaming service, to produce ‘Voting 101’ videos. She aims to leverage the reach of cam girls and OnlyFans models, many of whom have millions of followers. Siouxsie Q stated, "People who work in the adult industry and folks who consume adult entertainment, we are a powerful voting bloc."
Cherie DeVille's Advocacy Background
Cherie DeVille has a history of political engagement. In August 2017, DeVille announced her 2020 presidential bid at a press conference. She was joined on stage by 1990s rapper Coolio, who was slated to be her vice president. The announcement was sponsored by FuckingAwesome.com.
DeVille's platform included calls for renewable energy reforms, marijuana legalization, universal health care (rebranded as “Coolio Care”), new gun control legislation, and government-mandated net neutrality. She expressed her frustration with political leaders, stating, "I am tired of being misrepresented, and I am tired of being lied to by political leaders. I am fed up of the circus that is the White House today." Despite her stated seriousness about the campaign, it was ultimately shelved after months of "abuse and mockery."
Tristan Taormino's Return to Adult Video
In related industry news, Tristan Taormino has returned to adult video after a nearly five-year hiatus, launching her new production company, Smart Ass Productions. Taormino, a Village Voice sex columnist and AVN award-winning director, expressed enthusiasm for her return, stating, "I have always had one foot in the adult industry since I write about it often. I have watched as more women have stepped behind the camera, and I have been newly inspired to do the same."
Taormino previously directed, produced, and starred in The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women for Evil Angel in 1999. Co-directed by Ernest Greene and John Stagliano, and shot by Stagliano, the video received five stars from AVN, two AVN Awards (including Best Anal Release), and an XRCO Award. She followed this with The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women 2 in 2001, which was nominated for Erotic Film of the Year at the Erotic Awards in the UK.
In recent years, Taormino has focused on her sex education work, which includes writing columns for The Village Voice and Hustler’s Taboo Magazine, authoring sex books, lecturing at colleges and universities, and teaching sexuality workshops globally. Through her workshops, Taormino has observed that many men and women appreciate all-sex and gonzo videos but are "tired of seeing videos where the women either don’t come or their orgasms are clearly fake."
