From www.elitestv.com- Owen Lafave was featured last night on the E Entertainment Special, 15 MOST NOTORIOUS WOMEN. Lafave is the former husband of the beautiful blonde school teacher Debra Lafave, who made international headlines when she was arrested in 2004 for having sexual relations with her then 14 year old student. The special profiled women who committed murder to sexual offenses and more.
Owen is a vocal advocate for justice since the arrest and divorce from his wife of 11 months. He stated that “she is a sexual predator and she should have received jail time. He has spoken across the country about the double standards in the courts.
Owen has also been interviewed on high profile shows from Larry King to Fox News, Court TV, MSNBC and talk shows trying to share his views on the double standards and how society should not look at this as a ‘rite of passage when it’s a female student and make victim, but rather a serious crime.
At the same time Debra was arrested, there was a male teacher in his 20’s who had sexual relations with an underage female student. His story did not make it to the media, he was quickly convicted and sent to jail for over 8 years. Yet many of the female offenders walk!
“Her lawyer had stated that ” Debra is too pretty for jail, it’s like throwing meat to the lions”. He was also going to claim a ‘bi-polar’ disorder defense if it went to trial.
Due to the fact that the victims’ mother did not want her minor son to testify in court due to stress and anxiety problems he was suffering, the Prosecution offered Debra a plea bargain. The plea included her accepting a guilty plea, 3 years house arrest, 7 years probation and permanently registering as a sex offender. She cannot live near a school or teach school as a career throughout her lifetime.
Owen authored a book titled Gorgeous Disaster where he addresses the court issues and mental issues of Debra. Owen is also is the featured subject of an upcoming documentary titled, “After School” which studies cases of Teacher- Student sex scandals dating back as far as the 80’s to 2009.
Owen, a commercial banker by trade, is now re-married with two young sons. He is seeking to launch a nationwide initiative - “Don’t Cross the Line” that would be available in middle and high schools for teachers and students.
Owen has taken a heartbreaking and publicly humiliating incident, and turned it into something positive by educating and spreading his story. “If by speaking out I can help one student or teacher not cross that line, then I’ve accomplished something good, ” stated Owen Lafave.
