WWW- A former Naval Academy quarterback accused of rape testified Tuesday that his accuser initiated the encounter, which he described as “sex gone bad.”
Midshipman Lamar S. Owens Jr. told a court-martial panel that his accuser invited him to her room through an instant message. When he arrived, Owens said she tugged on his sweater and indicated she wanted him to join her on her bed.
Owens said the encounter in the pre-dawn hours of Jan. 29 ended abruptly when the woman became still and unresponsive.
“It was the most bizarre thing that’s ever happened to me,” said Owens, 22, of Savannah, Ga. “If I could change everything about the couple of minutes of consensual sex, I would change it in a heartbeat.”
He testified that realizing that his accuser’s roommate was in the room “just added to the weirdness of the situation.” He repeatedly described the encounter as “sex gone bad.”
Owens is charged with rape, conduct unbecoming an officer and failure to obey a lawful order. He faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted of all charges.
The Associated Press is not identifying the woman because she is an alleged victim of sexual assault. She testified last week that she resisted Owens’ advances, and protested that she had a boyfriend.
Defense attorneys recalled the young woman to the stand on Tuesday and questioned her about her use of a painkiller. The woman said she took Vicodin, prescribed following surgery on her left foot, but did not say when she took it.
The woman, who is now a senior at the academy, said she had “nightmares and weird hallucinations” after taking the drug.
She also testified that she has no recollection of incidents described by male witnesses, including claims she was drinking heavily at a bar the previous night.
