Mastrick writes: FWIW I wanted to give you my two cents on Max Hardcore’s conviction and sentencing.
I’m glad to see that he’s going to do time – this should serve as a wakeup call to producers in particular and the industry generally. Many people have been saying for years that Max and a few others have been pushing the envelope too much – prior to the Euro release that Seymore Butts did the industry more or less observed the three tier test that Miller v. California imposed and attempted to give each film some “redeeming social value.”
GVA also had a dominant role as a distributor – if they didn’t take a title it was doomed.
So to a certain extent GVA “policed” the market and kept a lot of questionable market from ever hitting the street. It was not a fair means of doing so but it was the de facto control nonetheless.
Over the course of time distributors sprung up like weeds and GVA’s market share diminished. Content became more and more raunchy, to the extent that taboo content became publically available. The result has been bad for everybody – increased government attention and the possibility of greater censorship. Hopefully Max’ jail sentence will discourage this kind of porn and, in doing so decrease the level of interest that the Justice Department has in the adult industry. Enjoy your time Max!
