KENOSHA, Wis. – from www.milwaukeenewsbuzz.com – A man accused of transforming his Kenosha apartment into a shrine full of dolls, stuffed animals, child pornography and pictures of girls he shot himself at Lake Michigan beaches, has pleaded guilty to 10 of the 20 criminal charges levied against him.

Kenosha police first knocked on the door of Kevin Derks, 54, in 2009 after he purchased a membership to a “known child pornography website” through the online payment service PayPal, according to the criminal complaint. Derks initially refused to let officers into his apartment, but agreed to speak with them in the basement of his apartment building, where he fainted while answering questions, falling to the ground and injuring his head.

The next day, police returned with a search warrant. Derks was still hospitalized from striking his head the day before. Officers allegedly found an apartment that had been transformed into a shrine to young girls: The wall and other flat surfaces were covered in pictures of them, including nude pictures. There were two mannequins in the room, one of an adult woman and another of a young girl.

Police also found about 50 dolls “lined along every wall in the living area,” according to the complaint. There was also a bed in the living area covered in stuffed animals and two non-functioning surveillance cameras. Derks later told police he installed the cameras to scare off apartment maintenance workers or other unwanted visitors.

Despite the stuffed animals, the complaint says, “The defendant stated that he had never had children in his apartment and that he does not try to lure children to the apartment.”

Police seized about 150 DVDs containing images of “child pornography, child erotica and girls on Kenosha area beaches” as well as cameras and binoculars. According to police reports, Derks said that for about five years, he had been taking photos of girls at Lake Michigan beaches from a distance of 30 to 50 feet using “a binocular-style camera … some people questioned him as to what he was doing.”

Derks had also created memorials in his apartment to children who had died. “When talking about this,” the complaint says, “the defendant became emotional and asked how someone could hurt children.” Derks said he had transformed his apartment into “a world he could go home to” and that he became more interested in children as the world, to him, became “worse and worse.” He said he took great care when going in and out of his apartment to make sure no one saw what was inside.

Police also found 21 rifles and hand guns in the apartment. According to Derks, before decorating his apartment about ten years ago with pictures of girls, he had decorated it by hanging guns on the walls. He insisted he had never shot any of the guns but had them in case there was some kind of trouble in the apartment building.

Last week, Derks pleaded guilty to 10 out of the 20 counts of possession of child pornography filed against him in Kenosha County Circuit Court. His sentencing is scheduled for April 21.

Kevin Derks pleaded guilty to ten counts of possession of child pornography in Kenosha County.

He was charged with 20 counts in November 2009, but ten counts were dismissed Friday. His trial had been scheduled to start March 28.

According to a criminal complaint, the 54-year-old had arranged mannequins in a sex act and plastered every flat surface with pictures.

The complaint also said he had a poster of actresses Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen with a caption inviting himself to join in sex acts with them.

Investigators say Derks denied ever having sexual contact with a child, but that he thinks children are beautiful.
