Hot Florida teach Debbie LaFave has got some competition in Chicago…
Chicago- A 42-year-old woman who worked as a library assistant at Glenbard East High School received six years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to having sex with three underage male students.
Laurie Augustine of Downers Grove pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault for having sex with two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old during a two-month period in 2002. Several of the encounters took place inside the Lombard school, where Augustine was hired in 1999.
DuPage County Judge Michael Burke gave Augustine one six-year sentence and an additional 40-month sentence, both set to start Aug. 6. Burke said Augustine will receive credit on the six-year sentence for the 333 days served since her arrest. Augustine will also have to register as a sex offender in compliance with state law.
After the sentencing, Michael O’Sullivan, father of one of the victims, read a statement written by his son, who was 16 at the time of his relationship with Augustine. The statement called the former library assistant a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” whose abuse destroyed the young man’s ability to trust people and briefly made him consider ending his life.
“I hate, hate, hate you for ruining my life,” O’Sullivan read as Augustine stood by, showing little emotion.
But the tears started to flow outside the courtroom when Augustine, a mother of six, started talking about how hard it would be to leave her children, the youngest of whom is 11.
“How do you say goodbye? Parents shouldn’t be separated from their kids,” she said. “I would do anything to change what happened in the past.”
Augustine said she thought her sentence was harsh because State’s Attorney Joseph Birkett wanted to make an example of a woman.
Said Birkett, “The fact that the victims in this case were boys and the defendant was a woman is irrelevant. The law is clear.”
Augustine had faced up to 15 years in prison.
ABC 7: – A former high school assistant librarian has been sentenced to more than nine years in prison after she pled guilty to an improper sexual relationship with three male students.
Laurie Augustine, who worked at Glenbard East High School, has three weeks of freedom before she begins serving her sentence.
“I know I did wrong. I take accountability for that, believe my medication,” said Laurie Augustine, as she left court with her mother. “He said if I went to anybody and told them, he would tell his mommy that this lady did things to him that he didn’t understand. He had me wrapped around his little finger.”
Augustine acknowledged her guilt and spoke about what’s most important to her right now.
“My oldest son is getting married next summer. And I have a son that’s gonna graduate next summer. I’ve got a whole bunch of them…my babies,” said Augustine.
Augustine had illicit sex with 16 and 17 year old students at Glenbard East. One boy’s father read a statement from his son:
“I hope that you stop her from ever being able to hurt anyone again. She was like the sheep in wolf’s clothing. She tricked me. She used and abused me with no regard for me. I hate, hate, hate her for ruining my life.”
Laurie Augustine’s mother continues to defend her daughter.
“It is a travesty of justice, is what it is. Those kids were not victims. I work at the school, I know who they are,” said Linda Bade, Laurie’s mother. “They had more control over her than she had over them.”
“She preyed upon them, manipulated them. She was in control,” said State’s Attorney Joe Birkett, DuPage County
Laurie Augustine already spent nearly a year in a jail cell until her family raised enough money to post her bond. She will get credit for time served and could ultimately spend about 6 years in prison.
Augustine has six children. Her husband divorced her after she was arrested 2 years ago
