from www.jacksonsun.com – Gibson County Sheriff Chuck Arnold said investigators will wait until a high school teacher is released from the hospital before she is taken into custody on charges that she had sex with a student.
Arnold said Tuesday night that his department was told by Shelby County authorities that Bethany Dyer, 36, was not a patient at a mental health facility in Shelby County. But Arnold said on Wednesday afternoon that he’s now convinced that Dyer is receiving treatment in Shelby County.
“It doesn’t serve the situation well to take her out of the hospital and then bring her back,” said Arnold, who declined to identify the hospital where Dyer is a patient.
Dyer is charged with aggravated statutory rape and statutory rape by an authority figure.
According to the warrants, Dyer, who lives in Rutherford, is accused of having sexual intercourse with a teenage male student three times between May 2009 and October 2010.
Dyer used her position of trust and authority as a teacher to entice the student to have sex with her, according to the warrant.
Robert Galloway, the Gibson County director of schools, said Dyer has worked at Gibson County High School for 11 years as a health sciences teacher.
Galloway said he suspended Dyer without pay after concerns about her conduct were brought to his attention.
“I contacted Child Protective Services and the district attorney’s office,” he said. “She was immediately placed on leave.”
Galloway said there are two investigations into Dyer’s conduct — a police investigation and a school district investigation.
Dyer taught four classes of health science and has been replaced by a substitute teacher and two registered nurses on staff.
“In the time that she’s worked for us, she had all good evaluations,” Galloway said.
