from www.charlotteobserver.com – A Myers Park High exceptional children teacher has been charged with one count of sexual activity with a student.

Kristina Ngum, 43, turned herself in at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Saturday after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police obtained a warrant for her arrest.

In addition to teaching, Ngum is the head coach of the Myers Park varsity cheer squad, according to the school website.

Police began investigating Ngum Friday, after detectives arrested the student on an unrelated drug charge, according to a CMPD news release. Detectives said they determined the alleged sexual activity happened at a location off campus. Authorities did not say when the alleged activity occurred.

Police also did not say how old the student was, whether Ngum was the student’s teacher or where the student went to school.

A man who identified himself as Ngum’s husband, but declined to provide his first name, said Saturday he does not believe the charge against her.

“That is not my wife,” he told The Observer in a phone interview. “She would not do that,” he said, adding that his wife often goes out of her way to help her students. “I would say that she is too overcaring.”

Ngum’s husband said he was shocked to learn from The Observer that his wife had been arrested. He said he thought she had gone to give police a statement about the male student who was arrested on the drug charge.

When Ngum was leaving Myers Park High Friday afternoon to pick up their children, the male student begged her to give him a ride, Ngum’s husband said. She was stopped by a police officer on the way home, according to the husband, who did not say why the car was stopped. He said that during the traffic stop, police found a drug on the student.

The student was arrested, and Ngum came home and told her husband what happened, he said.

Police on Saturday “asked her to go and provide a statement” about the incident, Ngum’s husband said. He said he had been waiting for hours for Ngum to return and had called her cellphone several times.

Ngum is in custody at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on a $2,500 secured bond.

Ngum’s Facebook page lists her as a 2010 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she studied special education. She graduated from high school in Petaluma, Calif., in 1987, according to her Facebook page.

In July 2011, Ngum was arrested on charges of false pretense and misdemeanor larceny, Mecklenburg County records show. The status of that case could not be immediately determined. In 2008, Mecklenburg County records show, Ngum was found guilty of driving while impaired.

CMS spokeswoman Tahira Stalberte said Saturday she did not have access to personnel records on the weekend to say how long Ngum has worked for the district or her current employment status. On Ngum’s Facebook page, she said she began working for CMS in August 2011.

Stalberte said the district performs background checks on all employees before they are hired but did not know whether the district was aware of Ngum’s prior conviction.
