Tennessee- The illegal strip club New York, New York in South Memphis is being forced to shut down until a full hearing in May. The club has been operating since it opened two weeks ago without an occupancy permit.
Attorneys for both sides were in court on last Thursday arguing whether of not the permits for New York, New York were issued properly.
A plans examiner for the county testified that when it comes to permits, strip clubs can be classified as restaurants, clubs, and even recreation centers.
City and county attorneys argued that the club was operating illegally. Earlier in March, it was issued a permit for a restaurant. After the club’s permit was revoked, it opened anyway. The strip club’s attorney says the permit was revoked unlawfully, and that’s why it opened.
After the judges decision, attorneys for both sides wouldn’t comment on the decision.
City Council issued a ban on new strip clubs last year. It should expire in three months. The strip club’s owner says his property was grandfathered in because the club has been in the works for several years.
