In UK: porn maker Anna Span challenged British Board of Film Classification over a controversial sex act

Violet Blue writes on www.sfgate.com – If you don’t want to read about female orgasms with visual results, I suggest you grab your raincoat and move on.

However, if you want to read the latest news about a significant victory for the validation of female ejaculation, the gleeful normalizing of female pleasure in pornographic depictions, and one woman’s victory over the U.K.’s film ratings board for woman-made porn, then welcome in out of the downpour. Female ejaculation may be a topic that’s as valid, politically charged and debated as hotly as male circumcision — but now the BBFC says it’s real, it matters, and the squirt stays in the film.

This change is thanks to Britain’s first female, porn filmmaker, ten-year pioneer and pro-porn activist Anna Span (see also: annaspansdiary.com )

Span has been making explicit porn for several years that typically features hot young lads and ladies doing what comes naturally for her lens, with the females (and female fantasy, and female viewers) in the forefront of what she does. The lady is so serious about women’s desire she wrote two terrific DIY books for people who want to make their own porn.

Her latest project, “Women Love Porn” was not just more hot lady-lovin’ porn: it highlighted a few things to resolve so we girls can all move on and just enjoy porn already. Span tells me, “‘Women Love Porn’ is the result of a competition in which I advertised for female film makers to apply to produce and direct their own sex scene. I received over 100 submissions at the time. I chose the top five female porn directors, and they are the ones shown on this DVD. The winner, Katie Coxxx, went on to produce her first complete DVD called ‘Apocalypse Angels,’ also on my label. Women Love Porn is also the name of the label for all porn by women which we release, that aren’t directed by me. Plus, I think that (some) women do love porn very much!”

They do, indeed. According to Nielsen Net Ratings, one of every three porn viewers online is female. But “Women Love Porn” held a surprise for the British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC has historically banned films that show female ejaculation, claiming that the expert medical advice they solicited maintained there is no such thing as female ejaculation, and therefore any depiction of a woman’s ejaculation was pee porn.

The U.K. isn’t alone with its head in the quicksand. Here in the U.S., in 2000, when famed porn attorney Paul Cambria crafted a set of no-go obscenity guidelines for pornographers to follow to be sure not to fall afoul of obscenity prosecutions (by way of ‘community standards’), he included “squirting” on the danger list. The list was taken seriously — for an Internet minute, anyway.

Pretty much every woman who ejaculates (and more than a few MDs) would find that notion just a bit, well, wacked. Span was ready. When she submitted “Women Love Porn” to the BBFC for rating, aiming for an R18 certificate, the BBFC asked her to remove the gushingly, happily orgasmic scenes. Span remarked to me, “I knew they would ask for the scene to be cut so I already had my defense ready to appeal.”

I had to know: how did she argue her evidence for scientific proof of female ejaculation?

Anna tells me, “Here is the text of my initial letter to the BBFC. We then went on to get a sample from the model tested at a regulated lab to prove it wasn’t urine too:”

I would like to take this opportunity to request reconsideration for the edits requested by yourselves on the ‘Women Love Porn’ R18 DVD submission.

On the cuts form you mention ‘woman urinating onto her fingers.’ I appreciate that the sight of urination in a sexual film is not permitted in the U.K.; however, I want to show evidence that in this instance (and in many instances I have experienced in my professional career and personal life) this is in fact a case of female ejaculation.

It has recently been proven that female ejaculation is apparent in some women and is argued that it is possible for all women. I enclose a copy of ‘The Human Female Prostate’ by Milan Zaviacic professor of pathology for forensic medicine at the Comenius University Bratislava Slovak Republic (Slovakia). Mr. Zaviacic is the world leader in the medical examination for the existence of female ejaculation. He has written over 500 essays on the subject in various worldwide scientific publications. He has won many international awards from the scientific community for his work. This book is based on his finding from research conducted from over 20 years’ studies focused on female ejaculation and the female prostate.

I also enclose ‘The Female Prostate Revisited: Perineal Ultrasound and Biochemical Studies of Female Ejaculate’ by Wimpissinger, MD FEBU, Karl Stifter, PhD, Wolfgang Grin, MD and Walter Stackl, MD. (I appreciate the surnames are a little unfortunate in this instance!) Another, more recent article from this month’s New Scientist magazine is also enclosed. Please note the numerous personal affirmations from readers, which follow the article too.

All three documents provide clear, conclusive evidence of women’s ability to ejaculate. I am sure you will find this evidence outweighs any evidence provided in support of the ‘anti female ejaculation’ argument you may have been furnished with in the past.

I also enclose a declaration from the two performers involved in this particular scene that both agree that this was a case of female ejaculation — and not urination — which they have also witnessed in their time.

I would also like to add to this that all members of the crew including myself witnessed the ejaculation and knew that the speed, volume, viscosity, smell and sight were all very different from urine. To be honest we were all very shocked by it! Especially Dean who received the ejaculate in his mouth…

I appreciate that urination on video is deemed illegal and that you must safeguard against it being passed in the U.K. I would add however, that all of us involved (as well, I’m sure as the scientific experts on the subject) contest that with minimal practical experience it is easy to differentiate between the two acts.

Urine is always yellow in hue, even when the woman has drunk plenty of water, this also shows against many materials, duvet covers etc. Urine also leaves the body in a far more controlled manner at first, even when the bladder has been full for some time. Ejaculation is far more forceful and exists in far more volume than urine at first release. In other words, urine takes ‘time to get going.’ Surely this is something that can be differentiated between by your examiners with some initial training? This is the situation with many other censorship bodies around the world who pass female ejaculation and not urination — for instance the U.S.A. — so they must be making a case-by-case decision, which is all I ask you to do in this case too.

I therefore would request that a distinction be made between urination and ejaculation as per the attached evidence and that “Women Love Porn” is passed at R18 without the need for the cuts set out in the cuts list. If you feel that you need even more evidence, please feel free to contact me on the above number and I will be happy to supply it to you.

So, at least in the U.K., we do know that female ejaculation does indeed exist. Interestingly, the U.K.’s 18 certificate and BBFC rating system are far from the confusion around porn and obscenity, and the MPAA’s shadow-government rating system. Until recently, 18 certificate films could not show actual sex acts, though they were loosened to allow simulated sex at the millennium. In 2004, the BBFC gave an 18 to Michael Winterbottom’s “Nine Songs” which contained actual sex acts, deemed “artistic merit,” followed by the films “Shortbus” and “Destricted.” The R18 rating is for films considered “hardcore pornography” though it also used to be for films with simulated sex. It’s widely seen as a move toward Britain having a more civilized attitude about porn consumption. Though don’t get me started about what they think of kinky porn…

Still, maybe we can look forward to more progress for us pro-porn ladies. Happily, Span tells me, “We are releasing further films by other women on our Women Love Porn label and I will be shooting again early next year.”
