WWW- Michael Jackson admitted yesterday that he has paid hush money to stop kids from accusing him of molestation, but insisted he has never harmed a child.
The surprise confession came hours before “Dateline NBC” aired a report that the self-proclaimed “King of Pop” paid $2 million to the son of a hand at his Neverland Ranch in 1990.
Jackson, 45, is scheduled to go on trial Jan. 31 for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old boy in 2003.
“I would never harm a child,” Jackson said in acknowledging that he has paid accusers before.
His statement made no mention of the NBC report, which involves a different youngster. It also did not mention the $15 million to $20 million he paid yet another boy to settle a 1993 case.
“Years ago, I settled with certain individuals because I was concerned about my family and the media scrutiny that would have ensued if I fought the matter in court,” he said.
“These people wanted to exploit my concern for children by threatening to destroy what I believe in and what I do. I have been a vulnerable target for those who want money.”
Former Santa Barbara County Sheriff Jim Thomas told “Dateline NBC” that authorities learned of the $2 million payout in their 1993 probe. The family of the 12-year-old had agreed to never discuss the deal in public.
Jackson has pleaded not guilty in his latest case.
