LA Times Goes On the Set of The Incredible Hulk XXX

from www.latimes.com – It’s noon on a Wednesday and inside a Canoga Park soundstage, the latest film to star Marvel Comics’ storied character the Hulk is hours behind schedule.

Crucial sets still aren’t finished – including the all-important gamma ray chamber — there’s an unforeseen problem with the Hulk’s makeup and the production needs to be out of the space by the following day. Despite these complications, producer Shylar Cobi takes it all in stride.

“Typical porno,” he says with a shrug.

No, this isn’t a companion project to director Louis Leterrier’s “The Incredible Hulk” or Joss Whedon’s upcoming “Avengers,” this is “The Incredible Hulk XXX: A Porn Parody,” the latest production from the SuperXXXHeroes brand of comic-book-related porn parodies produced by adult-video powerhouse Vivid Entertainment.

Instead of looking to the recent films starring Eric Bana and Ed Norton, “Hulk XXX” draws its inspiration from the 1977 TV movie that starred Bill Bixby and kicked off the hit television series. If you ever watched that series and wondered how the Hulk’s pants stayed on when the slim Dr. David Banner “hulked out,” well, that won’t be an issue with Vivid’s vision of the character.

Indeed, what sets the SuperXXXHeroes films apart from porn’s long, long tradition of film parody (think “Pulp Friction” and “Miracle on 69th Street”) is that this new wave of parodies isn’t content to swipe the title and general themes of their mainstream namesakes – they’re actually trying to re-create the exact look and feel of the originals.

In the case of “Hulk XXX,” that means a full wardrobe of vintage ’70s bell bottoms and butterfly collars and sets and hairstyles made to be carbon copies of the network TV original.

“There’s been lots of superhero parodies from other companies, but they always end up just parodying the character. I’m remaking [the ‘Hulk’ TV pilot] almost exactly, but with sex,” says the film’s director, B. Skow [pictured with Lee Stone].

“Instead of making it a joke, I’m trying to keep the drama of it.”

The hope is that “Hulk XXX” will appeal to comic-book fans as well as porn fans (though it’s a question whether those two audiences are actually different) and generate a bona fide hit in an industry that’s locked in a constant battle with the pervasive drain of free Internet porn.

This approach has been a hit so far for the company. The first film, “Batman XXX,” which was a dead-on re-creation of the campy 1960s TV series starring Adam West, was named both the bestselling and best renting title of 2010 by Adult Video News (the porn industry’s leading trade) and cleaned up at the AVN Awards in early January, earning seven awards, including best parody. “Superman XXX,” done in the style of Richard Donner’s 1978 blockbuster, will be released on Jan. 31, and more are on the way: Spider-Man, Captain America, Wonder Woman and Thor are all slated to get the XXX treatment, and the company is even looking to create its own original superheroes, with names like Spread Eagle and High Beams.

“When you’re doing an adult parody like this, you want to find four or five things – moments or lines or scenes — that people really remember from the original,” says Skow.

And how do Marvel and DC feel about their intellectual properties being turned into fodder for such productions? Both companies declined to comment.

The filmmakers say they have the fair-use doctrine on their side and no permission from Marvel or DC is needed, despite the fact that the Hulk and even the set are a pitch-perfect re-creation of the originals. However, they’re very careful when it comes to the Hulk’s mournful theme song. “You can’t copy music in a parody,” Skow says. “I’ve got a guy who does TV jingles. He’ll do his own version of the theme song.”

Back on the “Hulk XXX” set, the makeup situation has been resolved (food coloring was used in lieu of makeup on certain sensitive body parts) and filming is finally underway by 4 p.m. Between takes, the actors marvel at the relative emphasis on story and character compared to the stuff they normally shoot. “This is definitely the longest script I’ve ever had,” says Lee Stone, who plays the Hulk half of the character. “It’s got the most dialogue scenes, which is fun.”

Stone’s costar Dale DaBone, who plays David Banner, studies clips of the TV movie on a laptop between setups and is happy to dissect the particulars of Bixby’s acting style: “He doesn’t move his facial muscles. Ever!”

For DaBone, the porn parodies have been a dream come true. He channeled West for “Batman XXX” and the King for “Elvis XXX” and he’s just itching for the chance to play Tom Cruise in a porn version of “Top Gun” or David Hasselhoff in a dirty “Knight Rider.”

“I’m never going to be called to be in a movie with Julia Roberts, so this is my chance to see how I would have done,” DaBone says.

“Maybe I’ll be terrible and people will laugh – and that’s OK, it’s porn – or maybe I’ll really impress someone.”
