DENVER — Former Denver City Attorney Lawrence Manzanares, who was facing charges of theft of a city computer, has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Denver police said Saturday.
Det. Virginia Quinones said the body of the 50-year-old Manazares was found under a bridge near the Highline Canal adjacent to Eisenhower Park.
She said officers found him Friday afternoon, the apparent victim of suicide.
Manzanares, a former judge, resigned from the City Attorney’s post in February after a stolen laptop was allegedly found in his possession. He had said he bought the computer from a man in a parking lot and did not know it was stolen.
In addition to theft and embezzlement charges, the Harvard graduate had faced charges of tampering with evidence, official misconduct and computer crime. When the computer was confiscated from Manzanares it was discovered that someone had attempted to remove a large amount of pornography from the computer’s hard drive
