Left Holding the Bag, Prostie In U.S. Senator’s Husband Scandal Fears Retaliation

TROY – The woman accused of providing sex for $150 to U.S.Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s husband will not cooperate with prosecutors in the case, her attorney says.

Alycia Martin, 20, of Westland faces a misdemeanor count of prostitution and is set for a hearing at 11 a.m. Monday before Troy District Judge William Bolle.

“She has some concerns and she is not going to give up anyone’s name,” said defense attorney Frank A. Cusumano Jr., adding that Martin fears retaliation.

“If there is no offer from the prosecution then the case will be tried.

“Martin failed to show up for her first hearing April 22 and Cusumano said he got involved after learning of her case on the Internet.

Cusumano was asked by Martin’s family, who live out of state, to take the case.

Cusumano picked Martin up from a motel in Roseville last Monday, almost a week after she missed her first court hearing, he said.

“She hadn’t eaten in two days and had no money,” Cusumano said.

“She became involved with prostitution about a year ago after being a dancer in a club.

“Cusumano helped Martin clear up the outstanding warrant for failing to show up in court and said she is a victim of the people who ran the prostitution ring, who promised to get her an attorney but failed to do so.

Troy police say they were investigating a prostitution ring operating out of the Residence Inn on Livernois on Feb. 26 when they stopped Stabenow’s husband, Thomas Athans, after they saw him leave Martin’s room at the hotel.

Athans, 46, agreed to cooperate with police and wrote a statement describing how he paid Martin $150 for oral sex at the hotel.

He faces no charges related to his transactions with Martin.

He told police he met Martin online and was given directions to her room after calling her on his cell phone.

Athans, former CEO of the liberal Democracy Radio, will likely have to testify for the prosecution if the case goes to trial.

Troy police, who went to Martin’s room after Athans made his statement, said they discovered sex toys, condoms and lingerie scattered around the room and that Martin was wearing a bikini top and cutoff sweatpants.

Martin told investigators that her Web site and the room rental at the Residence Inn were handled by someone else, but refused to identify anyone.

Police confiscated $421 in cash, a cell phone and a laptop computer.

Police and Troy City Prosecutor Lori Bluhm say they would like Martin to cooperate.

“If she has been forced or is a victim in this case we are still open to hearing that portion of her story,” said Troy Police Lt. Gerry Scherlinck.

Cusumano questions the decision to prosecute Martin while Athans was allowed to pay for sex without legal consequences.

“The ‘John’ is allowed to walk away free in exchange for his cooperation,” Cusumano said.

“We’re trying to help her move on with her life and become a productive member of society. Ahe is not evil. She is just a 20-year-old girl who made some bad choices.

“Schlerlinck said Athans would face criminal repercussions if he withdraws his cooperation.

“He certainly has not gotten off scot free,” Scherlinck said.

“He is as deeply involved in this as (Martin) is and still has to testify if this case goes to trial.
