Hungary – from www.realdeal.hu – The one glimmer of hope in last week’s dismal report on the state of retail on Budapest’s Andrássy út was word that a new luxury department store may soon open on the capital’s most scenic shopping drag.
But the picture seems to be a bit more complicated. According to index.hu, the store would be the first such investment by the Hungarian Docler group, which until now has been focused on web development, more specifically the interactive erotic website livejasmin.com, which is said to be the world’s most popular porn site.
Launched in 2001, LiveJasmin was not the first website where users could watch and interact with “performers” through a webcamera and chat application, but its aggressive marketing helped it become one of the most popular within a few years. According to web statistics company Alexa, today it is the world’s 46th most visited website, placing it ahead of cnn.com.
The annual turnover of the site is estimated at $100 million. The company is trying to keep details of its operations and ownership a secret. It has been accused of forcing some “performers” to participate, and in 2007, former employees talked to business weekly Figyelő about compulsory seminars reminiscent of scientology sects, while they also said the most valuable employees received bonus trips, gifts and plenty of money.
Permits have been requested for the company’s Andrássy út project, and if they are granted, the store to be called Il bacio di stile (“The kiss of style”) could open in September 2012.
