from www.examiner.ie – A man has gone on trial accused of raping his then 65-year-old mother at her home in Dublin three years ago.

The court has heard the accused told gardaí that the sexual intercourse on March 2, 2008, was consensual.

In opening statements, the prosecution told the jury that the now 69-year-old widow was allegedly raped by her son on the evening of Mother’s Day.

She had gone to bed early after coming home from a four-course lunch.

Sometime after 11pm, the doorbell rang. It was her son.

It is the prosecution’s case that the accused poured a vodka and the pair talked. She was in her nightclothes.

According to the alleged victim, the next thing she remembers is coming to on the floor of her home to find her son having sexual intercourse with her, after which she repeatedly asked him to leave her alone.

The jury also heard that her son was arrested two days later. He admitted having sexual intercourse with his mother but told gardaí that she had encouraged it and started it and that he had given in because he’d had a few drinks.
